Imho, it's a matter of semantics.
Either I astrally project or I try to have an Out-of--
body-experience.
If there's a distinctions it's probablyt the fact that it's possible to have an OBE without conscious effort of trying. Astral projection, on the other hand, suggests an intent behind it.

Further to Jilola's good point about intent, there is another "difference" in the way people view OBE and astral projection.
The term "out of body experience" is often, but not always, used to describe a projection into the real-time zone, i.e. an astral layer slightly removed from the physical world.
Conversely, when someone says they are going to "project into the astral" they often mean they are visiting an entirely different realm / dimension.
OBE's to "un spiritual" people is a near death expearence. But they dont know that you can do it by your intent, like we try to do here on this forum.
Most people dont know what the astral even is, heh.
Isn't OOBE the same as Astral Projection? But Astral Projection is what you do, and OOBE is your experience. It seems like people are saying "I'm going to try to Out of Body Experience" when they should be saying, "I'm going to try to Astral Project." Feedback would be appreciated.
