i guess no one really knows for sure but robert bruce wrote about it in astral dynamics.  from what i remember i have the feeling i don't hwave to worry about it.  i don't recall exactly what he said.  do you have the book?  if not, get it.

He said to the effect that when you AP only a copy of your mind leaves the body thus leaving the original to hold the fort, so to speak. And should anything try to attack, your consciousness would instantly snap back to your body and defend itself thus making it impossible for anything to invade your body.
