I hope someone can help me with this problem. A few months ago I started to meditate everyday, because I read of all the benefits for your health and spiritual growth. But I have stopped again because of the following: after only a few minutes I am already in a very deep meditative state, is that normal? And when I stop after 10 minutes I feel kind of dizzy, or lightheaded/hazy. Like I'm not completely back in reality. I would like to meditate again but I don't like these feelings afterwards. So why do I have them and what can I do? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

When I'm done meditating, I tend to have a very similar feeling to waking up in the morning, sometimes more energetic, but not lightheaded or hazy. I think to answer your questions we need a little more information as to what exactly you're doing.

A few questions:
What's the goal(s) of your meditations?
What type of meditation are you doing?
What do you mean by "deep meditative state"?
Have you tried any other methods/techniques?

Hello Stookie. No I don't feel at all similar to waking up in the morning. In fact I have the same problem if I take a nap during daytime, that is why I never do that.
Well, the goals of my meditations are : to feel relaxed during the day, so not only during the meditation. I would also like to feel more balanced, because sometimes I react to stressfull and too nervous to unexpected situations. And I would like to experience more/longer AP's which I recently learned from CFTraveler, are phasingexperiences. To become more quiet in my thinking. And ofcourse to get a better chance on having an obe. These are the main reasons.

The type of meditation I do is a simple one, I follow my breath with my awareness and try not to follow my thoughts but let them go and then try not to think. I don't use music or sounds.

With deep meditative state I mean that I am very relaxed, I start to feel heavy in my chair and the outside world seems to disappear.

I haven't used other methods, I don't really know a lot of other ones and have read that this was a good one to begin with. I hope this is enough information for you to find an answer.

Have you tried NEW? I ask because it helped me have more "balanced" meditations. After a few weeks of it, things seemed more "energetic" and less groggy, and really helped me get more of a feels-like-you-just-got-a-massage relaxation as well as other benefits. Once your comfortable with that, you might get more of what you want out of your meditations and health and daily life. Plus, it's easy with no visualization. Taking the time to do it is the hardest part after learning.

Since your using your breath with awareness already, NEW might be the thing for you. Here's a link: http://www.astraldynamics.com/tutorials/beginners/index.html

I know exactly what you mean about the hazy feeling now. That's why I don't sleep in the daytime either. I feel worse after getting up. But a NEW session in the afternoon is a different story.

Hope this might help. :)

Maybe you should spend the same amount of time coming out of the meditation as you do getting into it. Slowly tell yourself you are becoming more aware and more clear, do a visualization or whatever works.

Thanks Stookie, I going to try NEW, it sounds very interesting and something that indeed might work for me, I have never heard of it before. (However, I heard about Robert Bruce and I happen to have ordered his book Astral Dynamics last week.) I think it is exactly what I need, also because of the other benefits that were mentioned on the website.

And Lighten thank you too for the tip, I will also use that one. I have also found a few tips on the web myself, drink water before and after the meditation and/or meditate every other day instead of every day.  :-)

I started with NEW, but every time I practise, the following night/early in the morning the muscles of my jaws are so tight that I sometimes can't even open my mouth to yawn and sometimes my jaw gets stuck.  :-( Does this mean that I have to stop for a while or practise less often? I hope someone can tell me what to do.

I'm not sure and wouldn't want to lead you in the wrong direction. It's possible that it's something like an "energy blockage" that your exercises are working loose and if you keep at it, you'll get rid of it. Or, it could be that your not doing the exercises completely correct (it took me a little bit to do a full body circuit correctly). Or, it could also be entirely related to something else. If you're concerned, maybe take a break for a week or until it goes away and then try again and see if it comes back, and go from there.

The forum over at Astral Dynamics probably has people more knowledgeable on the subject than me and give a better answer, as it's Robert Bruce's creation.

I'd guess that there could be too much tension- I'd advise a 'full course of' relaxation (doing progressive muscle relaxation, for example) before starting the energy work, and some dissolving afterwards.  If the problem is block-related, using water as the element when doing the facial area might help.

Timandra

Yes, I now know it is tension. I started doing the relaxation, and will stop with NEW for some time because the jaw-tension hasn't disappeared after the last time I tried it. I will do Qi gong instead because I felt relaxed after the two times I tried that. And energy breathing also helps. Thanks to the both of you for the advice.
