Try to interact with them and find out for yourself. Only you can answer that question!

I know that answer is vague, but it's true. If you have a belief already on what it is, you are only one that can change your mind. My opinion is they are "real". But that leads to what is real. That topic on what's real and what isn't is currently being talked about in this thread here.

I think this question is more of a philosophical one than anything.  Ultimately everything is just different manifestations of the source.  So it can be aspects of yourself if you like or it could be totally foreign to you if you like.  You get to make up your own story on this one.
