Try in the early morning, when you are more rested but your mind is still not awake. Don't worry about losing awareness, you could still wake while in the midst of an obe. Keep trying.

In the world in general and in this nation
May not even the names disease, famine, war, and suffering be heard.
May virtuous qualities, merit, and prosperity greatly increase
And may continuous good fortune and subline well-being perfectly arise.

It is very difficult to do at night, if not impossible, unless you are one that sleeps during the day and is awake at night. You should try during the morning or afternoon and you should have a lot more luck. Increasing your concentration will help a lot as well, but it will still be easier to do during the day.

Alice had got so much into the way of expecting nothing but out-of-the-way things to happen, that it seemed quite dull and stupid for life to go on in the common way.

Although I understand what FallnAngel is saying here, I have to point something out.

Although it may be EASIER to practice during the morning (due to your body being extra relaxed from a few hours of sleep), this in no way should discourage you from trying at night.

I ALWAYS practice my techniques at night.  After all, even though you usually fall asleep, it's a perfect opportunity to get familiar with the way our thoughts swim around in our heads, and how we can slowly quiet them down.  Every time you lay down, you can use that opportunity to practice your OBE induction techniques.  You'll be able to get to Focus 10 easier and, as Frank mentions, direct your thoughts higher up the "consciousness cone."

But I do agree with FallenAngel....practicing at night usually results in a failed projection attempt; but each time you think you fail, you're actually learning from your experience and making internal corrections for the next time!  Best of luck...

I agree Jeff. I should not have said it would possibly be impossible to do at night. But it is much easier to do if you are more rested and awake. I find that at night before going to bed my mind tends to want to wonder more than the rest of the day. It is usually easier to do during the morning, or for me I prefer the afternoon. But this does not mean that nighttime does not offer possibilities to explore as well. Trying to stay aware while your body goes to sleep is something that I encourage as you can learn a lot. But I usually do not have any OBE or not for very long because I usually fall asleep.

i havent cked out that ruiz guy, however remaining aware during sleep is extremely difficult. it takes years and some vigorous dedication most of the time. i actually have never heard of anyone being able to do it fast. i believe that the tibetan buddhists, that are capable of doing so, remain aware throughout the night. they claim to do this by keepiong their mind clear the entire time and if they are thinking about anything at all it's a focus object to keep their consciousness at a certain spot until they are developed enough to do w/out the object. they claim to dream lucidly, and when it comes time to stop dreaming they just remain in pure awareness until the next dream sequence occurs.  trying the above excersizes will probably be suffucient enough. however, this will be a sure shot but will require dedication and hard work. i'm sure you'd be able to find out more information on the net.
gl w/ it.  happy projecting.
