Yup, seems like sleep paralysis (sometimes refered to as "the old hags syndrome") to me.

I've had sleep paralysis a couple of times myself and it freaked me right out until i fiqured out what it actualy was :)

Check out the link below if you want to find out more about it.  There's some info on that page about sleep paralysis and lucid dreaming which may be more applicaple to you in this case.

Thanks volcomstone and the-dawg!
Those all sound like reasonable suggestions to me, scares the bugger out of ya if you don't know what's going on tho... I've had lucid dreams before but not like that, they were a lot more fun!

Yup, sleep paralysis. When I was about ten or so it happened to me one night, scared the acid out of my spine. [:)]

Now I can get it at will (after a few minutes). It's not a scarey feeling at all now. When I want to move I just focus on moving one part of my body like my fingers. I'll then say to myself "move" and just will myself to move... paralysis broken.

Hi, this is my first post here,  about 8 months ago I had a lucid dream (or what I thought was one) and I found myself sitting in front of a screen of moving images (projector or tv) in a 'class' situation and then some woman took me to one side. I said something about being in a lucid dream to her and was quite excited so then she showed me what looked like a set of pantone colours in a hand-held flip chart, with symbols and colours. I assumed that it would help me to stay conscious if I read these. She was very po-faced and serious. Next thing I knew I was looking at a long list of names of people. The woman then said "This is a list of people who DON'T think they are possesed" (implying that they in actual fact ARE). Among them was my own name at which point i began to write something (it could have been my name, it was getting fuzzy at this point). All of a sudden it was like something was controlling MY hand and it was shaking violently, making what I had written look shaky. At this point I was pretty damn scared and woke up. As I woke it felt as if there was some kind of force on my chest (although I wasn't paralyzed and could move about)> It was aa downwards strong pressure, I remember liking it at the time to some strong magnetic field. I could move my arms and whole body around quite OK, no restrictions like normal state of awakeness. It lasted for about 30 seconds to a minute which was scary, I didn't know what to do but was quite scared. What could this have been? Any ideas, I am still curious..but nervous.

Many thanks,

Matt
