The same thing happens to me.Whenever I pass though a barrier the scene will change.I also have the feeling that going up is somehow "lighter", and going down "darker", but that may have alot to do with expectations.
As for your questions:

"whose dream?"- It`s your dream,your experience.

"a higher level of my own?"-Yes.

"an astral realm?"- Thats the way I would interpret it, but you have to fit it in with whatever belief system you use to describe these altered states.Personally I feel that an AP and LD are one and the same, the differences being the amount of conscious control one has.

I find that if I fly high enough in a LD,I eventually (sometimes sooner than others,and sometimes the dreamsky is too high) reach a barrier of light.

I pass through the barrier,into a kind of void.the voids are lighter/brighter if I fly up,and darker/heavier if I fly down into the barrier in the 'earth'.

when i pass through the void,I end up in another dream...

questions:

whose dream?

a higher level of my own?

an astral realm?
