Do we dream all night or only during REM sleep?

The scientific people have done quite a bit of studies on sleep and the dream state. They seem to think that dreaming occurs during REM sleep. It was reported in 1953 that these neuroscientists discovered a physiological state which occurs periodically during sleep (every 90 minutes). There is a heightened brain activation during this time including a burst of rapid eye movement (REM), increased breathing and heart rate, genital engorgement, and paralysis of bodily movement (the person is highly aroused yet fast asleep).

There are some good websites and books on the many aspects of the sleep and dream state. A favorite of mine is The Lucidity Institute. Their website is: http://www.lucidity.com

according to my psych book/teacher we can dream during NREM sleep and I would tend to agree since well... I seem to constantly be busy in the mind, even if it's just like half dreaming....

and it seems impossible that I'd be constantly in REM the whole time because I mean, the brain needs NREM too...? Well... I'm sure I'm not the model sleeper though.

But what is a WILD? Waking Induced Lucid Dream? I've seen this acronym thrown around a lot lately and I'm not quite sure what it means...

if it is what I think it is then I think you kind of force your mind into a certain level of brain activity, but I'm not sure if  you actually go into REM or not..........

That would be very interesting to find out.

Here is a link to a nice article that talks about WILD and the relationship of OBE and WILD (wake-initiated lucid dreaming):

Happy new year all and thanks for the replies.

holy reality, im guessing NREM is non-REM sleep?

Hmm.. what a contradiction lol. So either some people just get to REM sleep easier than others because as i said in my first post ive personaly witnessed people dream after only 10 minutes of sleep. Or people can dream in other states apart from REM sleep.

Im wondering, can people have WILDS during meditation without having slept just before? e.g. has anyone reading this had a busy day then settled into meditation and had a WILD without sleep first?

p.s. sorry if that question is answered on the site u gave Nick but when i tried it the site was dead.
Thanks

Ive read many sites that said dreams happen during REM sleep and that this state occurs after about 5 or 6 hours of sleeping.
If this is the case though how can people have WILDS without sleeping for a while first. also, i noticed that when my father fell asleep the other day infront of the TV after about 10 minutes he began talking in his sleep, no more than 5 mins after that he was laughing in his sleep and when he awoke he said it was because of a dream he was having.
My mum also confirmed she dreams the minute she falls asleep so whats the deal? can anyone shed any light on this for me please.
Thanks
