What exactly IS lucid dreaming? Cuz I have had a weird dream that I can never remember all the way since I was 4 and I am 14 and I was wondering if you could explain it somehow?

sometimes when im lucid dreaming, ill become aware in a place thats (as far as i know) totally fictional, but it seems like ive either dreamed there before or actually been somewhere like it.. am i being manipulated to think i remember it as part of the setting or does lucid dreaming actual recall things you otherwise cant without difficulty?
