Falling in my Dreams

I posted my first thread last night.  And sure enough, I briefly flew in my dream.  I also had one of those "visits" that I still don't know what they are.

Anyway, periodically, I dream that I'm falling down.  I always wake up before I hit.  Someone told me that if you don't wake up and hit, it probably means you died for real.

Can someone explain this?

Thanks so much for your help.

Hello Sally,
If your friend is telling you that death in dreams causes actual death then i can assure you they're wrong and that there's no reason to worry.
Ive died many times in dreams, infact as far as im aware dying in dreams is quite common. Usually after i die in a dream i wake, but ive had times were the dream would simply fade out and id enter another dream, no ill affects.

This old post discusses the issue of "death in dreams" and im sure from reading it you will be reassured :).

Hi Roo.  Thanks for the link.  I enjoyed reading everyone's story about death dreams.  I don't think I've dreamt that I've actually died.

I dreamt that I had a head-on collision with a truck.  I remember not hearing anything at all and not feeling any pain, just a lot of glass breaking all around me.  I remember thinking "is this what it feels like?"

I've also dreamt that my car went off a cliff and plunged into water.  But I always wake up after that, so I don't ever really drown.  I do know how it feels like to be drowning  :( .

Thanks for replying to my thread.  I'm so glad I found this website.

sally2004, persuing your dreams isn't always a light and fluffy experience.  You'll often find yourself taking an inner glimpse at some of your worst fears.

No matter what happens, you can't die in a dream.  Death isn't a bad thing either.  It can often represent change, transformation, or teach you a lesson about yourself.

When observing your dreams, try to learn from them.  What do these experiences I'm seeing tell me about myself?  What do the feelings I'm feeling while having said experience tell me about myself?

I had a dream about a week ago where I drove off a cliff.  Things like this, falling, having your car not work, car accidents, etc are all quite commen.

You will find however, that your actions in your dreams are directly related to your actions and thoughts in real life.  In other words, if you are trying honestly and very hard to quit smoking cigarettes in real life, you might find yourself resisting them in a dream as well.

Now what if you had no desires, fears, or worries.  What would you dream about then I wonder?

Hi Sally

I often dream of drowning.  Sometimes I wake up just as I'm sure I can't hold my breath any more.  Sometimes I "let go" and die I suppose.  But I'm still here to tell the tale!  :)

I would say drowning is probably one of the more peaceful ways to die, once you give in to the water.  That's only my opinion, based on what I've experienced during dreams.

Thanks for sharing your dream, sally. It's always a pleasure to read about peoples dreams, especially the weird ones :)

As the others said, you have nothing to worry about. I myself have died in a dream before. In that dream then someone kicked me in the chest, and broke my rib cage or something, so that the bones pierced my heart. In that dream, as I was dying, I felt a slight feeling of "letting go" then as far as I can remember, everything went black. When I woke up, I actually felt quite refreshed, and of coarse quite surprised over my dream, heh.

Normally you can breathe underwater while dreaming. It takes some kind of willpower to force yourself to breathe, but in-dream-water is just as breathable as air. (Of course for this to work you should be aware that you're dreaming.)

Drowning (= suffocating) is very painful. It comes with an extreme burning sensation in your lungs (lack of oxygen) and in the end you cant suppress your breathing reflex and you breathe in water (which also hurts like hell) and then you still dont get air, you panick, etc. (I dont know how it ends, because I survived staying under water for too long... ). I am talking about real life here. Drowning in a dream could be very different.

I've changed my mind.  I don't like the sound of any of that.

I didn't want to gross you out or something ... :)
(I just don't think dying in a painful way could be pleasant)

but as I mentioned: in dreams you can breathe underwater ;)
just try it its fun (and definitely more fun than drowning ;) )
