Does Audio Matter at This Point?

I bought a Nova dreamer from the Lucidity Institue (http://lucidity.com/novadreamer.html) and tried it like 20 times... but it never worked for me...  Either I missed the cues or I would just wake up.  I lent it to 2 of my friends and it did not work for them either so far...  But I read some positive feedback in their forums; so it must work for some people.

In the end, I prefer not to have to rely on external things...

I've been running a program that plays audio cues to get me to realize I'm dreaming around the time I'm in REM.  I've had it running for a week now with pretty much no results.  I was just wondering if I should even bother keeping it on.  For those of you that are already able to lucid dream.. if it hasn't worked at this point is it going to at all?
