I had a very short dream a few days ago where I was telling and showing another couple of guys how to alter their shape some way and thought I was really cool and smart knowing how to do this. Well then another guy who obviously was a lot more "advanced" in magical technique frightened me by slipping by me in the form of a black shadow like a ghost and I woke up scared.

Now I never had a dream where I purposely used magical powers or similar(besides flying) before.  I guess in astral plane that might be considered normal. I also think that when we learn or see something new in dreams that is completely unfamiliar it can be frightening(like flying) whereas with practice it could be done lucidly/consciously and help our development. Obviously I seemed to have a problem with my pride here too wehre there is always somebody around who is better whatever skill we might think we have(OBE or whatever)

"slipping by me in the form of a black shadow like a ghost and I woke up scared."

Hmm...  interesting post,  Do you believe in ghosts?  Ever been scared of a shadow?

I remember this one time I was outside late at night and I thought I saw a cat in my neighbors yard.  I was whistling and making clicks trying to get it to come over.  What happened is that it would walk a few steps then stop... then walk a few steps and stop.  After 5 or 10 minutes I finally realised that it wasn't even a cat...  it was just some water pipe or something sticking out of the ground.

My mind fulfilled my unconscious wish to see a cat.

In your case...  while you were dreaming,  your mind was expressing a fear you have of ghosts.  Me,  personally... I don't believe in them,  but that's my belief,  find out for yourself.

Plus... if ghosts are real,  then why be afraid?  What is there to fear?

With the pride thing...  let people challenge you,  I was just thinking about this earlier,  Jealousy can be used for good...  to make you a better person or whatever skill you want to enhance.

Take care.

Thanks for the comments. I am more concerned that I am afraid of the unknown, which after one is familiar with it is then not scary anymore. I had a thought the other day that dreams are like movies where the subconscious desires and fears are expressed. Sometimes we see horror movies or dream nightmare and sometimes other types of movies depending on mood.

Generally the supernatural abilities(like the shape changing I tried out in mentioned dream) can be seen as unknown or scary until we master them. Once we know how to fly in a dream for example it is fun but if we are against the idea or do not believe in it then we
can be scared by other biengs inhabiting astral realms or our own subconscious fears of the unknown which we must confront and destroy. Suppose you fly for first time and say "oh wow" and then a big flying dragon attacks you and you wake up in a sweat and are afraid to try flying in a dream for a couple of weeks.

Good!  You should consider it a privilege to encounter superior beings in your dreams.  They make much better company than inferior beings, no?

You need to get over feelings like fear or envy when you are in the presence of vastly better beings then yourself, when in dreams, or otherwise.  Attach yourself to them and they will lead you to a whole new fascinating sphere of Dream Experience.

For instance, years ago I began running into this one Dream Character -- the Young King -- Good Looking, Intelligent, almost 'daffy' he was so enthusiastic about everything.  At first I resented him, but I eventually decided that if I can't beat him, I might as well join him.  Well, I was entrusted to be something of a body guard.  One time we visited a Battlefield and we were standing out in the Trenches.  Several hundred yards off I noticed some Enemy Soldiers also lulling about, but I am easy going and decided merely to keep my eye on them... that if they didn't threaten us then I would hold me fire... live and let live (it occurs to me that Real War is often like that, among the Civilized Solders... fighting can wait for the actual Battles, and there is no need for solders to simply harrass each other in the meanwhile).  But the Young King noticed me looking over once in awhile, and in his vibrant enthusiasm said "Oh Good! The Enemy, lets shoot!"  And without really taking time to steady his aim, he simply sends off a bullet to let them know they are under attack.  "My God, what are you doing!?"... and I shove him down behind a berm and instantly rest my own rifle on the edge of a sandbag and quickly dispatch the two enemy soldiers who made the mistake of firing upon us from the standing position without first seeking cover.  But this action esculated up into a full scale Battle.  I decided to have the Young King removed to the Rear of the Action, because I sensed that the Enemy would assign special assassins to target him.

In subsequent dreams I found that I had passed some kind of a Test.  By cooperating so effectively with this Higher Being, I was given command of this small contingent of Angels.

So, all the Real Action and Rewards can be found when in the entourage of these Superior Beings.  So latch on!  Besides, what they have will eventually lift you up too.
