Title: smells and dreams
Post by: ladybug26 on March 18, 2005, 10:34:41
I was just wondering how many of you have the ability to smell things in dreams.  A few nights ago I remember being able to smell an odor in my dream, and now, in reality, I can't even begin to describe the smell, as I can't think of anything to even compare it to.

Also, my second question, just last night I had like 3 dreams in one!  I was dreaming about sleeping, and while I was sleeping in my dream, I was dreaming about something else!  Did I confuse you all!! After all that I woke up kind of confused-huh, go figure!  Does any body else do this?

When I go to sleep in a dream, I wake up. I think it has to do with the way I used to jump out of my dreams and go to the next one when I was little by closing my eyes tight and then opening them again.

I can't remember smelling anything in my dreams.

I have to say I've had very little experience with smells in dreams. One time I made up a potion which had a pungent smell. It made me nauseated in the dream, and I remained nauseated several hours after waking up. In the dream, I laughed when the other dream characters didn't want near this potion. They all backed way off from it.

Sleeping in a dream is still a mystery to me. It's fairly common from what I've read over time and listening to other's dreams. The closest I've been able to come to about it, it's layered dreaming. This may also be what is called a dream within a dream. I'm still learning about these things. I do know that it's a significant level of dreaming.

I have slept in my dreams many times.  Then in my dream of being asleep, I start to dream!  I can't figure out if this should be classed as a simple "dream", a "dream of a dream", or a "dream within a dream"!

Last night I did this and then woke up from my "dream within a dream" to my original dream.  So, still dreaming but now believing myself to be awake, I was annoyed that I hadn't realised earlier that I was dreaming. At this point I was standing in a room (rather than lying in my bed) and I thought this was a bit strange.

That was when I suddenly thought "this is strange, what if I'm dreaming now?" and then realised I was still dreaming! (Still following this?!).  To verify this, I did my usual reality check of hovering a few feet off the ground for a few seconds.  Yup, definitely dreaming!

So then I went off and had a nice long lucid dream.  After a while I woke up from this LD and was back in bed.  But in fact I didn't fully wake up - I was in that borderline "hypnagogic" state.  So I just floated off the bed and continued my LD.

I repeated this wake-up float away scenario a further 5 or 6 times.

Eventually, waking up in bed in the borderline state I could feel my left arm was very uncomfortable, so instead of doing the float-away thing one last time, I rolled over in bed and woke up fully, and waggled my aching arm.

Good fun...

Did anybody follow that?!  :D

Yes, I've smelled things in my dreams that were nowhere near my physical body.  However, it doesn't happen frequently.

thanks all for responding, At least I know I am not the only one!  And, like Naiad said, it doesn't happen very often for me either.  I just thought it was so odd that I woke up remembering a scent from a dream!

I have also dreamed within a dream. The interesting thing was that when I awoke from the "inner" dream I was aware that I was still dreaming the "normal" dream and was able albeit briefly to take some control over it. If this ever happens again I think it is a useful opportunity to take advantage of.  :)
