Really? I heard it was either a) viral advertising b) a hoax or c) legit. The site doesn't offer much in the way of critical analysis though. Seems dodgy. Thanks for the input. How'd you find out it was spam?

Hi,
The subject was covered on Above Top Secret last week, and yes, correctly stated as you said a viral campaign.

And welcome to AP

It's viral marketing. The Italian marketing company behind it specialises in viral and "guerilla marketing":

http://www.guerrigliamarketing.it/

It can be confirmed that the domain with the "this man in your dreams" material is owned by the company above with a simple WHOIS check on the domain name.

Aside from that the "backstory" on how this supposedly became known is questionable. What sort of psychiatrist would send a mugshot style drawing of a patient's dream character to other psychiatrists asking them to show it to their own patients? Only one who doesn't respect patient confidentiality.

I don't understand what their interest is here.....

Most viral campaigns are to spread awareness of a product, whereas what may be being sold here is not immediately clear, outside of the little ads on the bottom of the screen.

For one thing, the face is just creepy, and for another, I can't see what their intentions might be, if not to attract interest for those little ads...

Oh wait, now I'm doin' it too- they must have really hit upon some sort of psychological princinple here....

Oh well.

In their site (in italian) they describe how they place pictures of products as part of the information, only you don't really see them. So it could be somehow encoded in what is seen.  So maybe  that's how it started, and what we have now it the advertising campaign on how well it's working.  And it is working, because we're talking about it, aren't we?

It may well be just be a campaign to get people talking, etc. They start a viral concept and get it going all over the world and then say, "Oh, you know that thing about the guy appearing in dreams? We did that!"

That's comedian Todd Barry. He's hilarious.  :-P
