What is a good technique to either stay lucid for a longer duration

What's worked for me is try to keep most of the exhilaration and excitement under wraps and stay calm. Big emotional responses degrade atleast my LDs real quick.
Don't know how to goo about converting an LD to an OBE as I haven't the faintest clue what the big OBE handles like.

congrats on the move forward!

Bhikku-
The excitement is definetly one of the hardest things to keep under control intitially and just like you, I end up waking up when I get too excited as I realize that I am dreaming.  Good luck!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Ah man that is too cool. You're right, there's nothing like the first time you realize you're dreaming. It's like "WOW! Here's this whole part of my life that I've been sleeping through!"

I don't have much advice on converting one to the other (though OBE -> LD seems to happen on its own for me, the reverse is a tough one.)  But maybe it means you're becoming more able to bring consciousness to a sleeping state? Maybe it means that you will have luck with projecting. The two kind of go hand in hand for me personally so this is definitely great.

Thanks to all!!!!

I think that the excitement probably ruined it, but I can't see many people acting in any other fashion during a first time LD! Man the excitement sure has stuck with me. Do you think that calling for a guide or higher assistance could possibly help me during an LD? Has anyone tried that?

After my first LD I was high as a kite all day. I can't recall anything quite so totally amazing as that.
As for help, I found that an affirmation to remain calm and interested works well for me. But that may just be another way of asking for the higher self for help.

Good luck next time!

i know the feeling about jumping in the air like you did.  once i had flown amongst the stars and woke up with the most wonderful sensation which was carried over from my dream that i actually wept.

it felt so good to be so liberated.  i'm not sure if i was ld or obe but it felt great and i haven't been able to recreate the experience since.

i've been meditating for about 12 years and i think this was just an accident one night...

Hello to all you beautiful people!

OK a little preview to this: II have never had a lucid dream or a coincious OBE in my life. I had read somewhere that the easiest way to become lucid in a dream is to do "reality checks" throughout the day; like always ask yourself "am I dreaming?" Well I had done that for 2 months to no avail, so about 2 weeks ago I started to try something different. Several times a day, I look at the rings on my hands. I wear a sliver band on my left hand thumb and another silver band on my right hand pinky finger. What I do is just look at them back and forth for a few seconds, and think "am I dreaming?" And I do this about 20 times a day/

So Saturday night I having this dream where I am talking with 2 random guys who I don't know in real life but in the dream they were my friends. One guy was talking about how he wanted to see what Jesus looked like and the other guy was telling him how it didn't matter, but it was his message that was important. Anyway- so we all leave each other and I'm walking along what kind of resembles the board walk down here in Pacific Beach where I live, along the ocean. It was a beach with people all around. I'm looking out to the water and I notice what looks like a military helicopter flying parallel with the shore, but a few hundred feet out. As it gets closer, I see that it has no propellers and doesn't really look like a helicopter, but more like a big piece of machinery flying throught the air. As it passes me, it crashes into the water with a huge splash. As the spash dissapates, I see about 5-10 military tanks coming from the splash towards the shore. It's really hard to explain, but that "flying thing" was all the tanks put together, and when it crashed they split up- I dont' know if this makes sense at all so sorry if it doesn't.

So at this point I can tell the dream is about to get scary cuz these tanks are coming toward me. At the same time I wonder why this whole scene taking place seems to be nothing strange to anyone else who is around. Then, blessed be, I looked down at my rings on my hand! I look at my left hand, and the rings are there, but instead of the 1 that I wear on my thumb there are about 3-4 rings and they are all "fluid" and moving around. At that second I knew more than anything else I was dreaming! I knew it and it was like a rush of realization that hit me and it made me so happy I can't explain it.
So- I look at the tanks which are about 20 feet and closing on me, I smile and think to myself "I have never in my life flown in a dream before" I look up at the sky and jump straight up, about 50-100 feet in the air and it was the craziest yet best feeling in the world! Words can't describe it. So I look down at the scene, the people, the tanks, and everyone is looking at me with mouth gaping awe. I'm stopped in the air about 50 feet up and I begin to lose the lucidity- it's was kinda like I was slipping back into the dream without control, but I ended up waking up and it was 6am yesterday morning. I was so friggin excited I jumped out of bed and kept replaying over and over in my head for a few hours. I still can't believe it- I can for sure say that it was the best feeling of my whole life.

Like I mentioned before, I have never had a LD and so I never persued having one, I have only been studying towards OBE's. What is a good technique to either stay lucid for a longer duration, or the change an LD to an OBE? Thanks to all just for reading this, it brings me so much joy to share this with all of you.
