I am curious how long do I have to do the reality checks. I've been trying this for like a week, mostly every an half hour and still nothing...
I know that it is quite individual but still.. can you tell ?

Hi NAB

Every half an hour for a week?  Boy, that's a lot of reality checks!

You can't do the checks half-heartedly.  By this I mean at 3.30pm you say to yourself, "am I dreaming?" then say "of course I'm not" and carry on with your day.  You have to absolutely satisfy yourself 100% that you are not dreaming, either by looking at a clock, then looking again, or observing the room you are in ensuring it looks exactly as your room should, or pinching yourself, that kind of thing.

At night before sleep, mentally say to yourself that you will become aware while you are dreaming.  Say this over and over as you drift away.

Keep at it, keep it a serious goal and you will get there.

until it becomes a habit and you do it automatically. from then on its just a matter of time before your mind uses the habit in a dream, which will trigger lucidty.

and also, after the first few lucid dreams, they become alot more common. i had a lucid dream every night for 3 days this week.

You can also do reality checks whenever you see something that happens out of the ordinary or is something that could happen in a dream. This kind of conditions you to do the same while dreaming where out of the ordinary events will be much more common.
If you will it it is no dream.

For me, it goes like this:

I do reality checks each 15 or 30 minutes. I start asking myself if I'm dreaming or not, then I focus my attention in the environment around me and jump to test the gravity (if nobody is looking!) or, alternately, try to elongate my finger. Finally, I try to remember what I've been doing before that moment.

Each check takes 10/15 seconds and I keep doing them for 2 or 3 days. After this period I try to forget the whole thing.

I usually have a lucid dream or an OBE 15/30 days after this (it really helps if you have a dream diary).

Good luck, and keep trying.

Hey guys, thanks for your replies. I'll carry on with reality checks, I was just wondering how long could this take.

Reality checks are one of the weakest methods to induce LD. For some people they do work/ for others they don't.. I would say it is only useful to use it as a additional method combined with some things like MILD or WiLD. I did reality checks for a month every hour, didn't have one LD! With other methods I was able to induce as much as 14 LD's a month, If something doesn't work after 10 days I would say change the strategy. different methods are to be found here:

my best method get up after about 7 hours of sleep write down dream then go back to bed doing MILD or WILD.

Good luck Tom

What methods do you use? Can you shortly tell about that MILD and WILD method? Just simply. I saw it somewhere but still don't understand those ones. Thanks

Hey NAB

You should take a look at the link I provided!

MILD is as follows, although I usually do it a little shorter then that. try for yourself and find out what works. i usually just go back to bed and repete in my mind that I will have a LD with as much emphasis as possible

Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD)

This technique is quite effective and had has helped many people step over the threshold from physical to dreaming.

1. Find a position that works for you and that you can easily and comfortably fall asleep.

2. Relax (Refer to the Relaxation section above this)

3. Repeat to yourself as you fall asleep: "I will wake up after every dream period and I will remember my dream" Believe that you will wake up after each dream you have. (The first time I've tried this it has worked moderately well; another way you could do this is set your alarm, but practice makes perfect)

4. When you wake up write down your dream immediately. Even if you can barely remember anything, write down how the dream made you feel, or how you felt when you woke up.

5. Lie down and drift back to sleep. Imagine that you are back in the dream that you just had. This time, however, imagine that you saw a dreamsign in your dream and recognized it. As you fall asleep keep visualizing yourself in your dream, recognizing your dreamsign, and realizing that you are in a dream. (Note: try not to let your mind wonder on this step as well as step 3)

6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 every time that you awaken during the night.
