in my dream, I'm back at an old job... it's late... round midnight and time to go home... just checking if a door is locked or not. The door is unlocked, leading into a dark staircase. From the dark, I hear my name whispered.

I forced myself to wake up instantly because it was quite scary...
I'm not into astral travels or lucid but I have had lots of vivid dreams all my life, most of them nightmares :twisted:
any suggestions?
I'd chalk it up to a nightmare, and not worry about getting worried about it being anything else.
I had once a voice speaking to me in my dreams,.It was an old woman voice telling me: "Quit smoking now!" To say was just a nightmare might help keep fear down, but might not be the most accurate explanation...I think.

This dream interpretation is a bit on the supersticious side. There could be some truth to it, however there are better possibilities.
Fear doesn't necessarily mean something or someone bad is involved (superstition).
Opening of one's awareness can also be scary. In the subconscious, the night time and staircases represent a looking into this unknown area. Dark is the area one cannot see (unknown). Stairs represent a moving up or down in consciousness. You don't say if this dream staircase is upward or downward. This will say tell where you are in this present conscious level.
Hearing a voice can come through in any form or fashion. The sender has to make the message come through to you the receiver. You may not be receiving at a volume loud enough, so it sounds like a whisper. A voice is a voice. I think it was telepathic communication.
