Just wanted to point out that I meant "normal" breathing; as in the one you use every second/minute/hour/day/...; not some breathing exercise you try once in a while.

what is the purpose of belly breathing?  Hum... I don't know enough to answer correctly.  I just read in some books and from my TaiChi teacher that it was a "good" way to breath...  Maybe it's related to the fact that belly breathing is so close to the dantien...

Anyway, after a few tries, I automaticaly switched to this breathing.  And now, and if I try to breath the old/normal way, it feels uncomfortable...

ahh just everyday breaTHINng, I should read stuff more often

anyhow, my breathing just goes on autopilot, even after concentrating on my breathing it'll usually just go by itself

One of the first things you learn in yoga is that our everyday breathing is basically wrong - its just enough to keep us alive.

With the deep rhythmic breaths as Michael mentioned, breathing using the stomach (the diaphragm) more than the chest is the correct way to breathe as taught by yoga.

A common method here is to use a 3 or 4 count each for inhaling, holding and exhaling, so you get a steady deep timed rhythm. After a while this becomes more automeatic, and you will find that even in deep meditation where your breath naturally slows down, you will still be breathing more deeply than just normal every-day breathing.

The idea is that the prana (or chi if you wish to relate it to oriental philosophies) is an integral part of the breath. Breathe more deeply, and in a regular rhythm, and you gain far more prana or life energy than with normal shallow breathing.

Rergards,
James.

I use belly breathing whenever I think about it throughout the day.

Deep breathing helps you to relax. Who does not need to be calm and relaxed throughout the day?

Not sure if it is the correct thread but:
What is your normal/everyday breathing technique...?
Personaly, I use belly breathing (as advised in some yoga books).
