Considering NEW system... how does reiki work?

According to what I have read, Reiki system uses some kind of universal energy which is not exactly that inside of us, ie, it is taken from outside, and a qualified master must "awake" your ability to manage it.

If this is true, then, does anyone know what the inner mechanics of this system are?
