G,day Dj!

It's a bit like using the force! the problem is that you really
need to get practice against other people to gain the experience
needed to be able to anticipate what your opponent will do.
The fitness is another thing,if your out of shape & don't have
enough stamina you will have to rely on quick finishing techniques
to end the fight quickly. If this fails you will not get much of
a chance to use energy for yourself let alone against someone else.

There are Kung -fu classes & should be one near you,but since
money is an issue get a couple of kung fu books from the library &
learn some techniques first & familiarize yourself with it,then you
might be able to incorporate some energy into it.

All the best on your journeys

Good answer Mobius.

The actual physical learning of most martial arts is more for conditioning.  The removale of fear through familerization with it.  Like being hit.  But most everything else can be learned through reading and practice.  You may need a guide sometimes to point out errors you can not see.  Training reflexes can also be more mental than physical.  Part of the biggest thing is anticipation.  A Sensei that I had one time encoraged us time imagine as we were walking down the street.  IE.  Your walking, la la la, and some begins to walk past you.  Imagine what that person could in a attack.  And how you would defend.  As it turns out it is very natural for people do think in this manner, but as always it is what you do with it that matters.

You should study an internal style like tai chi (at least 4-5 main styles) ba gua, xing yi, or a japanese variant such as Aikido or Tai Ki Ken. Some kendo schools also teach the internal side of kendo, and you get cool armour too!

With any chinese art you research, if your interested in energy body development, which includes a natural awareness increase to breath and internal processes, you should always ask if the instructor teaches the health side of the art. Most internal chinese stylists know at least SOME of what is called chi gung. This may be as basic as combining your breath with the martial movements of the forms, or may be as complex as using certain sounds to vibrate different locations inside your torso (healing sounds) etc. There are MANY different teachers in the wonderful, but I admit wacky at times, world of martial art. For every legit practioner there are 10 frauds who simply want you to bow and pay your dues, and you never learn anything about how to figure the truth out for yourself. Just do the form, pay the dues.

One form of internal chinese are that I enjoy because of the focus is so heavily on the development of the individual thru devoted practice is Yi Quan. An internal style written on in "warriors of stillness" a book on the medtative pratices of the chinese martial traditions.

Anyways, I hope your search goes well. When the student is ready the teacher will appear.

ARCHDRAGON

hi, i've been doing martial arts for about 5 years and recently been able to add internal power to my strikes
it's creates force so powerful that it knocked a man twice my size fly back 12 feet and in my stances I can't be moved even with 5 men struggling to move me, even heavy metal objects being swung at me when blocked with my forearms does no damage at all not even a bruise, and people at temple say that I have the strength of two horses this is starting to sound like bs but it is true and that is why i posted it here on this thread to let you know that there is a link between external and internal but it takes a long time  to train it, it is in all of us, and some heroes of ancient times were thought to be gods because of their abilities some could not be injured with swords or spears or arrows no matter how many or how vicious the attacks were. there has even been people in ancient times and even about 70 years ago that have been able to jump so high and far it looks like flying,
but as with everything the price is an equal amount of pain to bring these powers into your body. but in the end no more pain is there and only a pure example of the power of the ancients who were thought to be gods such as thoth, ra, and many others were all human that endured through all the suffering to become legendary. and yes there are some who cannot be harmed by even bullets or cannons but also the suffering to gain such power is enough to drive a man as mad as they come. very few are willing to endure the suffering to gain such power. but
if we all did the ancient practices then we mankind would truly be greater than any animals, weather would not harm us, and we would live for hundreds even thousands of years as the ancient ones did.  we
would have strength greater than an elephant or whale, machine would become useless because of how strong we become, but in this age to many weaklings, and greedy people, are unwilling to gain this great power and even prevent others from trying to obtain it, but in the end there is nothing they can do.       may we rise above the corrupt filth.

ARCHDRAGON, what type of martial arts are you learning? I am thinking of taking up some sort of martial art.

Correction: The physical movements of martial arts unifies mind and body into one unit. The way it's suppose to be. There is a serious dose of dualism in your framework below.

I have been doing Tai chi at home a couple times a week the last several years and also other energy work and yoga and meditation CDs and basically it all helps.

After doing 20-30 minutes of Tai chi yesterday for example I could really feel my whole chest around my heart chakra as very warm. TheTai chi routine also sends the energy from the trunk over the shoulder and hips to the legs and arms.  I would like to take a course where I learn to "fight" against people of course to test martial arts out more thoroughly although I realize the internal stuggle is the most important. Of course using th delveloped internal energy to increase the physical energy in the fight as described by archdragon seems quite interesting. Similar to Reiki, etc. in healing arts transferring energy directly over hands, etc. to other people or objects(sword or stick in martial arts) is something i would likeot be able to learn having already a very well developed energy body. I have read that in the indian martial art Kalarippayat they learn healing powers as well as fighting to help heal people's wounds and bruises after the fight. Basically the same energy can be used for seemingly contradictory purposes.
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

coincidently I am looking into starting Kung Fu

I have found a school just down the road from my university in Perth, Australia.  And they teach Tai Chi and Chi Kung along with the Kung Fu, so I am seriously looking forward to doing that, hoping to take a look at the place tommorrow, however money is a serious issue.

I am skilled at energy manipulation within my body, and I can sense energy outside my body and to a limited extent manipulate energy outside my body so Chi Kung has struck my interest, using it in martial arts sounds like a good application of skills.....
