Is anyone familiar with kundalini energy? Ive been doing some exercises and have gotten some good results such as more energy and vitality throughout the day but after reading up on some personal awakenings from those practicing kundalini ive come to question whether or not its a good idea to keep practicing. Several internet pages have warned about the effects of kundlini and to stay weary of it. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or is familiar with the subject. any information would help

Hi Jircgrd2,

I'm new to this site but just saw your post. I'm currently training as a Kundalini Yoga teacher, which works directly with kundalini energy (as do all yogas in fact). The idea of kundalini energy is talked about across many traditions and is really seen as an energy of awareness. There are many stories of people experiencing sudden or uncontrolled awakenings that can lead to mental and spiritual distress, if the person is not prepared for it. These can be a bit scary to read about and are definitely unfortunate for those who experience them, but these experiences are by no means inevitable.

There are ways to work with the energy safely, Kundalini Yoga (as taught by Jogi Bhajan) being one of them and the one I have experience of. Teachers of this style of yoga facilitate classes that include postures, meditation, breathwork and mantra to safely stimulate and direct the kundalini energy. The classes are built around kriyas that Yogi Bhajan shared in its complete form i.e. the teachers will deliver the class as they were taught to, they do not "make it up" or differ from the format. We open and close a class with mantra to call on the wisdom and protection of all the teachers that have gone before us, so again we are creating a "sacred" space so to speak to work in. As I mentioned this is one of the safe systems through which to work with the kundalini energy and it can be a transformational experience.

So in a nut shell my advice would be to seek the guidance of a teacher if you wish to explore your potential in this area. I definitely would not recommend practicing particular exercises on their own without a formal structure or without the guidance of a trained teacher as you are in effect playing with a potent force without protection. You could metaphorically think of kundalini energy like electricity. You can safely use it in your house to improve your life, as long as the circuits to contain and direct the energy are installed under the guidance of someone with training, but trying to create the circuits yourself without training is not a good idea.

I hope this helps and that you enjoy your journey exploring your potential.

Warm regards ~ Nat

its exciting and joyful but make sure you take it "slowly" and...walk the middle road, do plenty of work on your self. Blessings
