Overcoming this has been the hardest thing in my life.  I am just recently sober, and life is boring.  I can't find anything to do other than AA meetings, and I can't get it out of my head that my friends are out partying and having a great time.  All the worst things in my life have been a direct result of drinking, but it's not always bad.  I have also had a lot of fun while drinking.  I know that I want to stop.  It's made my life unmanageable.  But I know now that I am an alcoholic because for all the reasons I want to stop, I can't get it out of my mind.  Any advice on how to occupy my new found time?

I've known many people with drug & alcohol addiction who have had hard times stopping. I'm no expert, but it seems with them there are three things that help:

1- Family & Friends; they've always found new friends to spend time with that wouldn't encourage their problem

2- Hobbies; they would take up something new (like frisbee golf) or expand on one, like making music or art. Do something new at times when you would normally be drinking. But no TV - stay active.

3- Church. I'm not christian, but church always seems to help out better than anything else. I knew a guy with a $2000 a month cocaine addiction that stopped cold turkey. He claimes he had no desire to ever do it again. It's been over a year and he's still heavily involved in church and is truly a changed person.

You can do eet!

The Present Moment

Excellent advice so far. Do some exercise that will give you a good sweat to leach those toxins out of the body, or go to a sauna and let the heat do the work for you.
