In any case, a path that leads away from society is often a lonely one. I feel it is better to be a part of society to help improve it and bring it to a state where it is balanced.

I totally agree with that. I think that's what Thoreau was really about - not escaping society, but by living it by your own terms in a way that also helps others in society, hopefully giving them a bigger picture of the world.
