I can only help you with one thing, which is what the owl can symbolise.

According to Ted Andrew's Animal Speak the owl is a symbol of the feminine, the moon, and the night. It has been believed to have great healing powers. It has ties to fertility and seduction due to its association with the moon. It is a bird of magic and darkness, prophecy and wisdom.
The ancient Greeks associated the owl with the goddess Athena, and symbolised higher wisdom.
It is also associated with Lilith to the early Christian Gnostics.
There is a quote in the book from Sams, Jamie and Carson, David - Medicine Cards that goes "Owl medicine is symbolically associated with clairvoyance, astral projection, and magic, both black and white."
The owl is also associated with the ability to uncover secrets, to hear and see things others try to hide.

Also, if the owl is there for a reason, what type of owl it is can help to get specific details. For example, snowy owls have different habits than barn owls, and so they can be there for different reasons, sending different messages.

I would suggest finding out what kind of owl it is and trying and see if there is anything about that owl's behaviour, environment, or the way it is presenting itself to you from which you can glean some sort of learning relevant to your life.

Also, if you're interesting in learning more about how animals and nature can communicate with us, or about animal guides/spirits/totems, i recommend checking out "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews.

I have been told by several people that my soul is that of an owl totem, and I have actually experienced this several times in my dreams.  My guide oftentimes takes the form of an owl as well.

What you mentioned about the moon is interesting, as ever since I started training myself I have felt a strange kinship with it.

Thank you both for your replies, I have tried doing a bit of research myself from time to time but it appears that different cultures see the Owl differently, as either an omen of good, sometimes bad and occasionally both.

The colour of the Owl was a beige colour, it was difficult to see any detail though as the fence post it was sitting on was quite a distance away.

I'll have a look at ordering the book by Ted Andrews as it might shed further light on my experience.

Thanks again

Hi All,
I don't normally visit this forum and don't have much knowledge of Magic either but would just like to share a true story with you that happened to me when I was younger and then ask a question or two at the end.

I'll first give a bit of background as to where the story took place...

When I was a child I lived with my parents in an old 18th Century house in the countryside in England.
When my parent's first moved in they made a few changes here and there and whilst decorating and renovating they found two bottles containing some hair and pins, one under the door step and one under the grate of the fireplace directly below the chimney.
I have heard that such bottles were placed in these locations in olden times to ward off evil spirits etc.

One evening on a particularly wet and stormy night a woman came and knocked on our door and asked if she could stay the night, my parents offered her a place to rest as our house was out in the middle of the countryside and quite a distance from the nearest shelter.

The woman as I remember would have been between the ages of late 40's to mid 50's, she had short grey hair and was wearing hiking clothes.
As she took off her rain jacket we were all surprised by her necklace, she had an Owl puppet hung from her neck, this was not a small regular pendant but unusually large about the same dimensions as that of a small oval potato and decorated very realistically.

The following morning the traveller left but from that point onward up until the time we left the house, an owl would regularly come and visit and land on a fence post at the bottom of our garden.

I guess that it could be just coincidence, but the story still sticks in my memory to this day, my parents later told me that neither of them slept that night as they had a strange feeling about the traveller!

My questions are,

Could this woman have been a witch, good or bad?

What could the Owl puppet/charm signify?

What does the Owl signify or represent in areas of Magic and the esoteric?

Do you think there could be link between the traveller and the Owl in the garden?

Other paranormal things happened at that house, but I'll save that for another time, many thanks for any answers you can provide.

Cheers

S
