Mass-hypnosis (to bring your subject title into the topic) like the media, cannot affect anyone if they do not wish to be affected.

to answer you questions with my opinions:

1) The media is out to make money. The more people they can sucker in, the more money they get.

2) Again money. Most of the impulses programmed are to do with spending money on certain goods.

3) Nothing magical about belief phenomena. It is just programming, or more to the point, conditioning.
As to huxleys comment - does he truly believe that? If so - he's caught by his own words. No, I don't believe there's anything 'pathological' about belief. It just might stop people from thinking occasionally.

4) Huh??? are we talking C++, Visual Basic, Unix, HTML, Machine code???. Yes I'm a computer nerd and no I don't understand the question.[]

I choose not to be hypnotized by the media. When I see a commercial, I look for their disclaimers, like "required parts excluded" in a car commercial which could mean it has no motor. Lots of them dont include something in the price, so in my mind the price they give is completely invalid so I have no reason to remember it. If I see anything like that in a commercial, I assume the whole commercial is a lie. After seeing this kind of crap in MOST news, commercials, etc, I choose to think of all of it as bullcrap. I assume they all lie as much as the "truth in advertising" law allows, which is a lot. I assume they show me only what the government or people with money want me to see, and that is extremely far from the truth. I assume all surveys use biased data. If you combine all the toothpaste surveys, 50+ dentists out of every 10 have voted. 9 out of 10 dentists choose every product. Most commercials have 1 fact about their product, but usually 0. Its a lot of crap unrelated to the product. I look at this crap like I was writing a factual report on it and I give a rats butt how it makes me feel to watch it. Its not relevant.

What you are talking about is called Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
Basically, it's a form of hypnosis that uses language as a tool to
speak directly to the subconscious mind of someone without their
knowledge. By doing this, adept practitioners can influence
someones thought process in order to get them to do something
that they may otherwise resist. Salesman and professional public
speakers have been known to use it. One of it's tenets is "Whatever you can get a person to imagine, will be perceived as their own
original thought and therefore will not be resisted."

In NLP, the "associations" you refer to are called anchors.
Anchors can be anything related to the five senses. They can be
planted into someones subconscious at a time the person is experiencing a certain state of mind or emotion that the practitioner would like to be able to recall at a later date.

These anchors can then by triggered at a later date causing
the person in which the anchor was placed to instantaneously
re-experience the emotions and or state of mind that they were
feeling at the time the anchor was placed. A good example of this
is when you hear a song on the radio that you haven't heard in
a long time and it makes you think of an experience you had
near the last time you heard it or when it was popular or whatever.
If the emotions that you have associated with the song are strong enough, it can actually make you relive that experience on some level.

I was a true-blue discordian many years ago. Chaosmagick is very effective.  I'm particularly fond of clown magic.  My friends and I used to put on white-face and arrive, unannounced and uninvited, to a local merchant (say, a supermarket), and wreak havok until we were politely asked to leave.  How is this magickal, you ask?  He-he-he [] Sometimes all that is needed to effect change is to wake people up!  For about 5 years, I woke people up with Middle Eastern dance and some very loud finger cymbals.  I was part of a troupe and we showed up in the strangest places!
