Hey, I am new to a lot of stuff around the AP area and I was scrolling through the forums when I saw this..

MAGIC?!?

So, I have absolutely NO knowledge about magic (apart from Harry Potter xD) and I am assuming it isn't similar to the waving of wands in a spell duel?
I am meaning to ask for links or explanations for my simple questions:
1. What the hell is magic?
2. Can I do Magic :o?
3. Is it dangerous
4. Is it a negative/dark practice?
5. Can it bring happiness and light?

Thanks a lot in advance :D !!

Hello and welcome to Astralpulse ^_^
I am very familiar with the magick arts & I will do my best to answer your questions!
Everyone has different opinions on this topic, but I will share what I know.

1. To put it shortly, magick is the practice of materializing your intentions in reality with the help of symbolism, intention, and the assistance of higher powers (such as spirits, gods, piraƱa/chi/lifeforce or your sheer will power etc) how does it work? The reason we use symbolism in spell casting is for reality to reflect what we want, example, if you make a voodoo doll to lok like someone, you want what you do to the doll to effect the person it looks like. The same goes for the other symbols, for example, if you are doing a spell for world peace you might use a globe of earth.

2. Everyone and anyone can do magick! There is no "right" or "wrong" way, and finding out your own method usually is th most effective! You can get started by looking up spells online (such as "spells for beginners")

3. Magick itself is not dangerous- unless you are trying to preform magick in a dangerous way (be careful with fire when lighting candles or insense), or it may be dangerous if you have intentions to cause harm. Remember, "If harm none do as ye will" and the rule of threefold, meaning any harm you inflct on anyone will come back to you three times as bad.

4. Just like all things in life, it cam be used destructively, or constructively. Constructive/possitive magick is commonly called "white magick" while destrustive/negative is usually called "dark magick." However, white magick is more powerful & productive, sinse dark magick only fosters negative results.

5. Magick can be used for a far range of purposes, such as charms & talismans, healing, protection, drawing relationships, repelling negative people, calling money, increasing confidence, increasing psychic abilities, etc.

Sinse you seem interested, I'll give you some basic guidance on how to preform magick to get you started & you can expiriment with, note there is lots of spells on the internet, just ensure it "feels right" and always trust your intuition.

Step 1) decide what your intention is. What do you want this spell to do? Do you want to attract something such as friendship, love, health, or money? Do you want healing, protection, or guidance?

Step 2) decide what method is most effective for your intention.
-a charm (an item you put a spell on that you can carry with you or give away for the magickal effect)
-a talisman (an item you wear or keep near for protection)
-a spell (usually a easy to remember phrase/chant that may be repeated durring an action or written on paper)

Step 3) decide which tools to use. You want to use tools that are symbolic of your intention, here is an example of the symbolism of some items and colours you can use in (spell) casting:

The Elements
Water: emotions
Earth (plants, sand): the body
Air/Insense: the mind
Fire/Candles: passion & power

Easy To Find Items
Magnet: can attract or repell (such as an attracting love spell)
4 leaf Clover: good luck
Coin: for money & wealth spells
Bandaid: healing spells
Hair: from person spell is for
Higher power symbol: such as a The Goddess or a crucifix
Words: writing names or intention on piece of paper

Colour Symbolism
Red: Love, passion, romance
Pink: friendship
Green: money, health
Purple: psychic abilities
Blue: peace, wisdom
Yellow: confidence, power
Orange: courage
White: dreams, the spirit
Black: protection

Don't forget to always be creative! Happy casting :)
Feel free to ask me any questions or if you would like any more information!

I agree with Drakoreo‘s post. However, I would like to add and stress that all the tools you can use you can do well without them.
Actually, magic is nothing more than manifesting the intent you put certain amount of power behind. It is as simple as that. For you to understand, Jack, let‘s draw a parallel between physical and non physical (NP) worlds. As you certainly know now, while having a LD or OBE, you can place intent for something to happen and it instantly manifests there. Because you know you're dreaming and in control. When you are not aware your thoughts also manifest but randomly, since you are not in control. And that is where you get those crazy dreams from.

But the thing is that the same rules apply to our physical reality. Only it is much more stable and shared with others who also manifest their thoughts and that is why it is harder and takes more time to manifest things on purpose. You see, just like in a dream, you either realise your being in control of the events or you don‘t and your life flows uncontrolled based on your random feelings and thoughts. That being said, a destiny of some sort and your own decisions while dealing with the events set up by it also play a big role in my opinion. But often when you go through a difficult situation, you very likely imposed it upon yourself by negative thinking and vice versa.

And that is the core of it. The more power behind your thought and the more you believe it, the more you can influence the physical world the way you want. But because of the obvious reasons stated above it is hard sometimes and people make it easier by using symbols, spells etc., which are unnecessary but helpful by giving you something you can better focus your willpower on. An enhanced effect can be the result.
But I do not like the term magic, because it smells too much of Harry Potter and stuff like this with the real principle being not obvious. Sure you can wave a magic wand or draw pentagrams if you think it will help, because then it will, but it is unnecessary.

As already mentioned, it can be and will be harmful only if your intent is to harm and/or control others. There is probably some kind of karmic rule in play.

Good luck with your exploration of things you deemed impossible not so long ago.

1. What the hell is magic? I would define magic as attempting to affect the " physical" world using spiritual means.

2. Can I do Magic Shocked? The ability is inherent to all human beings. We are all spirits incarnate in physical. It's a natural ability though the degree of manifestation that results varies.

3. Is it dangerous  If you believe it is, then it is. Your beliefs, conscious thoughts anything that draws you towards physical is your worst enemy. If you choose initiation .. a real initiation that is... it can debilitate you for a short period of time but the benefits outweigh the short time you are out of it. It's something that you are not ready for yet. If you complete the Abramelin ritual your Guardian angel can then facilitate an initiation.

4. Is it a negative/dark practice? There is no power in that kind of practice. Your playing with your own shadows and imagination and nothing more.

5. Can it bring happiness and light? It can bring enlightenment. If your thinking that you can conjure up money or sex to make you happy, I would look elsewhere. Your better off going to medical or engineering school if you want that. If your lazy and want an easy way out of things magic is not going to help you. It's an art and learning and mastering any art requires dedication patience and a great deal of practice.  It's a way of life.

If your serious about it the first ritual I recommend you complete is the Abramelin the text of which can be found here. http://www.sacred-texts.com/grim/abr/  The ritual can be adapted somewhat to work needs but the isolation is the same. It states that it takes 6 months but if you have no psychic development training your going to need up to 18 months.  I can help you with some of the equipment issues as the material end of it. The materials are the least important

1. What the hell is magic?

I like Crowley's definition.  It's simple and to the point: It's "the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will."  Also "every intentional act is a Magickal Act."

Quote2. Can I do Magic :o?

You already do, by the above definition.    o.o

Quote3. Is it dangerous

It could be, if you prefer.

Quote4. Is it a negative/dark practice?

Only if you take or use it that way!

Negative/dark and positive/light come from a dualistic way of thinking.  For brevity I will say that Taoism and the Tao Te Ching make a pretty convincing refutation of the ideas of good/bad as being anything other than arbitrary opinions.  But, having said that, I would redefine "good" and "evil" as "service to others" and "service to self," respectively.

So my question would rather be, are you using magic to serve others?  Or are you only using it for yourself, at the expense of others?  It's possible to serve others and yourself at the same time, or to serve yourself in a way that doesn't exploit others.

Quote5. Can it bring happiness and light?

That's more of a philosophical question.  I personally think that if you need reasons to be happy, or if you have to do stuff to be happy, then that's not real happiness and it won't be permanent.  You have to be happy for no reason, to really be happy.  But yes magic could bring these things I suppose.

I think this is a great way to explore ideas, with sets of questions.  It can become a game of trying to ask the right questions in this case, because magic is a very broad and diverse subject, and if you can find the core of what it's actually all about then you've found something important and relevant to everything in life.
