Hello Everyone
Ego and emotions can be deadly in combination with magic. I have seen people who were able to get really good results trap themselves in meaningless cycles. It was because they had themselves visualized as the great master or teacher. They then found out that they knew nothing.
The best magic is done when the person has no emotional energy tied up in the results. They need something or want something to manifest but it is to improve their existence in their opinion. Not because they have an emotion involved in it besides self-improvement
All of the rest of the emotions just cause distractions except for compassion and loving-kindness.

I find it interesting that so many people are putting down sociology when sociology has much more of an effect on them than any magic they might perform.  In fact, any magical changes that one is likely to produce occur within the context of a social framework.  Magic, and even quantum physics could be considered subsets of sociology.

I think the problem is that people don't have a real understanding of what sociology is.  Ultimately, it is math.  The highest levels of statistical analysis(probably the only branch of mathematics that will be able to predict quantum behavior) have been created for the analysis of social and cultural trends.  The obvious reason for this is because there is no laboratory large enough to experiment with a culture(or is there???).  Hence the need for multivariant statistics.

See the above link for an explanation.

Anyway, I do agree that people who read sociology books and some crappy sociologists are annoying and are most likely trying to use the data to justify prejudices.  I just thought that sociology was getting unfair treatment.  No, I'm not a sociologist.  I just had to learn statistics(SAS, SPSS) and it was taught by the sociology department.

Why do these forums make me want to argue?  They really bring out a strange mixture of credulousness and know-it-all-ism.

is there a difference between sorcerers and "witches", or magic practitioners, or magicians or whatever you want to call it?  if so, what exactly is it that sets a sorcerer/sorceress apart from the regular magician/witch?  thanks.

The differences in labeling (that is all it is, labeling) are largely cultural.  Basically, magic is what it is.  Either you practice or you do not.  How good you are at it depends on a variety of factors. Some people are better at it than others.

Problems arise when people lock definitions in their minds and then slam other people who use other labels, or use the same labels differently.  Semantics, all semantics!  It causes a lot of problems.

There is also much misunderstanding in the field.  Wicca and paganism are so popular today, there are thousands who believe they are "witches" or "pagans" or "magical practitioners" simply due to their beliefs.  For instance, "witch" is a label, and Wiccans are using the label in a certain way.  Other magical practitioners, who see the Craft as a Craft, rather than a set of beliefs, look upon wicca with disdain.

Also, there are many "urban pagans" (an oxymoron if there ever was one) who are inspired by the Old Ways but don't truly practice them, except in the most shallow of fashions (fashion is a good word!). Real pagans get real annoyed at this.

In the final analysis, there are enough Egos to go around to keep people squabbling over labels and practices until the end of time.

Some people have the attitude that if one is never going to be a Real Sorcerer, then one should not bother learning about magic.  I heartily disagree with them!  I do agree, however, that people should be honest with themselves about what they are really aspiring to, and what they are looking for. Most people who call themselves witches and sorcerers and magical practitioners, simply ARE NOT. A good hard look at your life will tell you what you really are!

nice!
LABELS. finnaly "we" have labeled those THINGS!
but still, people put them on they self every day!
and ware them!

and still, 'sociologist' is the proffession in Occultism, not very famous!

"sociologists.." Alister Crowley called them.
the famous labeler!

n/a

there are many types of them,
but the worsest kind I have ever encounter are :

1 the crazy sociologist
2 and persons who seek emotional satisfaction.

"I can get no.."

and there are also those who seek true reality in Existent sense-
but with emotional charge!!
those are the con-artists.

and the
true occultist are the One who have proper channels to
deal with the entities and gods-on daily basis!
(not on weekends!)

and the
true esotherians are the One =who individualy seek TRUTH only, and especialy-when that truth is against them!
and not THEIR EMOTIONAL SATISFACTION.

I think this is a worthy subject.
and I think-the first -when you want to discuss magic and the occult.
(but it seems it is the last -here!)

have I forget something?
