stones?, i don't get it

hi yall, some of my buddhist friends have lots of beads they call prayer beads and that they wear sometimes and sometimes not. how does this work? they told me they vibrations or something happens when they them next to buddha or lu dongbin, but I still don't understand. do these
produce magical powers or what? please post if you know anything.
