Title: Whats Magic exactly
Post by: Cruel Tendencies on January 06, 2004, 22:15:58
A common definition of magick is along the lines of "The ability to cause change in comformity with Will."  A brief explanation...  Every act of creation starts out as divine potential, and goes through a series of phases or planes, downward until it becomes an actualized event.  The human mind, which consists of spiritual substance, has the ability to move up and down these planes of existence, and to alter them according to its Will.  Magick is the practice of raising one's consciousness to a plane above its normal state and building up the energies and giving it appropriate form, so that it can manifest as the magician wants it to as an actualized event.  In brief ;)

I don't understand how magic is different from metaphysics. Why do we have a magic forum and a metaphysics forum?

Good question.  Hmm.  Perhaps metaphysics is the enquiry of forms, and magic is the manipulation of forms through psychic energy means?

In other words, I think one seeks to understand, and the other to manipulate.

I think that's pretty much it, however it seems like metaphysics is interested in both understanding plus manipulation. For instance, the telekinesis threads are motivated by the fact that you can actually spin the aluminum foil around.

So maybe it's like this:

magic = manipulation using 'blind' trust that the spells work

metaphysics = magic + tying to understand why it works

Here are some 8-balls just because I like them:

[8] [8] [8] [8] [8] [8] [8]
[8][8][8][8][8][8][8]

Good point.

Hmm...  Two groups of seven eight balls, for a total of 14...  What could it mean?  [:P]

Yeah, trust, but I dunno about blind trust.  The methods of magic try to go by results, and acts of intention to bring about those results.

The correlation of those isn't really blind.

Magick is a collection of techniques. It can be considered a very archaic form of psychology which is why metaphysisists show an interest. Don't question how or why if you are getting success. Asking how and why makes you a scientist - so caught up in arguing whether something is or isn't instead of accepting that it is and getting on with the great work.
