I agree with some of the other members that this is a personal thing that you need to experience for yourself.  Each step of the way you will be learning new things and there's no magic answer for what is going to happen.  Having a child is a mind opener thats for sure.  I can offer you our experiences bringing our daughter into the world.  I can't say we're financially secure or anything like that but you mentioned having heard people go on about how much money they've spent on their kids.  Thats the same kind of people where if the kids don't turn out the way the parents intended, all that money has been 'wasted'.  Kids aren't about money, or things like the coolest toys or videogames.  Its about love and nurturing a new lifeform in a loving and comforting environment, trying to help them understand the big bad world, and teaching them how to learn and ask questions.

Using my psychic powers, I get some mixed feelings about the situation.  Something tells me that you need to get certain priorities in line.  You are at risk of imposing your fears and insecurities onto your child in various ways, putting pressure on them to grow up as quickly as possible.  Relax and let things take their course.  Don't keep putting happiness off as something you'll do when <you have a new car or a better job or a more stable relationship or whatever> because you really need to live in the moment.  If you look after now, tomorrow will be a better day.  You'll be a great parent if you can be more at ease with yourself.

Ahh, I see your post now, sorry I missed it. []  However, spirituality is neither a race nor a competition.  I can't see how one can measure something that is intangible and purely personal.  However way you see spirituality, there is no where to go and everyone will at sometime or another be "equal in spirituality".  

All that matters is the way in which you view it.
