Glowing/Shadowed Corners.

At night, when the lights are off, ever corner of one room in my house glows, when the lights are on, it is shadowed. I've repainted the room once so it would fit my new color scheme and the glow(and shadows) still appeared. In another room, there is a constant heat haze like affect just above one bookshelf. Out of curiosity, what are these things?

I am pretty good at interior design, and have painted more times than I can remember.

Many times it is shadowy during the day because the corner (right angle) is reflecting back the colored light (due to the paint) from the other wall.  This is why lights are usually placed somewhere near a corner (which can hurt more than help if you don't know what you are doing).

At night this can have the opposite effect because any light in the room is bouncing off of the walls and not getting dispersed in the darkness as quickly as say the middle of a wall.  This depends largely on where the light is comming in the room.  Sometimes it enhances the shadows in the corners.  

The heat Haze could be do to stagnate hot air that has risen.  Some houses don't disperse hot and cold air as quickly and efficiently due to the way they are built.

Anyway, best I could come up with without seeing what you are talking about.

I'd go with Hans' description for this one. It makes the most sense.

Outside of that, perhaps look into Feng Shui for an answer. You may be sensing pockets of energy in the corners due to the layout of the room.

It won't be spirit activity. They don't stand still in one place long enough to give the effect you've described.
