Is it generally considered better to be "in touch" with your higher self...?
And if so... how do you go about doing this and what does it really mean?

Well, at least from a spiritual point of view.
You can have contact with your higher self in several ways and even "be" your higher self for a moment through deep meditation. This happened for me two years ago during a meditation exercise out in the nature, and I will never forget the massive bliss, happiness and unconditional love it brought me just for a very short moment . I also had the "all-knowing" experience and it felt like I was one with the universe.

Here is an amazing story about higher self with some exercises:

Hope this bring some light on your path
I also want to thank YOU for bringing this topic up, now I have the motivation to explore my higher self further

Awesome!

Is your higher self also know as your subconscious mind?

In some literatures it is called that, the so-called 'unconscious link to higher dimensions'.
True knowledge exists in knowing that you know nothing.

the higher self is what you are. many people do not realise that their main spirit guide is really their own higher self. we can communicate with it directly with a little practice, and we can merge with it to gain the sum total of our memories from lives on this world and from others.

for want of a better way to describe it, we could say it is the soul you are, a huge multi-dimensional being that exists through and beyond all the astral layers/planes and so on up to the Oversoul planes where the higher self has been merged again with the next larger part of ourselves.

it isn't the be all and end all of everything, but, it is an amazing higher awareness level of our own that we can easily open up to.

In some metaphysical circles, the higher self is known as the superconscious mind.
conscious mind- Based on  external input, verbal, linear.  Awake mind.
subconscious mind- Based on memory and emotions, symbolic imagery,  Asleep mind.
superconscious mind- infinite possibilities; your "piece" of the connection to God mind.

In this model, your subconscious will control what awareness of the superconscious mind you have.  For example, if when you were young you constantly heard "stuff happens" your subconscious stores it away from your consciousness, and when you think of your possibilities, your consciousness accesses your superconsciousness only allowing the 'truism' stuff happens to manifest.  So in theory, if you constantly challenge negative truisms  in a way that  your subconscious mind understands,  you can "rewrite the program" to allow your superconscious mind to manifest positive results.

Tayesin,

How does one merge with there higher-self, and why would someone want to do that?

Hi!  I'm not Tay but I know what he is talking about so you can get an answer from both of us.

Your Higher self is who you really are.  It is the Love you are, it is your Truth.  It is the You who is one with everyone and everything.  When you merge with your higher self, you act spontaneously and in accordance with what is right and good for the benefit of the Whole which is what you are.

Merging with your higher self means that you no longer act from a place of fear and separation, rather you act from a place of wholeness, Unity and Love.  This may look much different to many people because Love is not always fluffy bunnies and people don't always understand your motivations in your interactions, that would be because you have no motivations, you just act spontneiously from your Truth and according to your intuition.  Why would you NOT want to merge with your higher self, that is also the part of you who will lead you to the fulfillment of your greatest dreams by trusting yourself to guide you.

Any time you restrict your actions or you feel challenged or fearful and act out of anger, jealousy or fear, you are acting from your ego which is what distracts you from knowing your Higher self.

The way I got in touch with my Higher self and started being able to differentiate the two was to start journaling.  I would write down my highest and greatest ideas of what I wanted to happen in my life and wrote only from a place of love and nonjudgement.  After a while, I noticed that my conficence started building in knowing my Truth and little miracles started happening that I noticed throughout my day.

So my suggestion to you is, start journaling and or meditating.  Find out the truth of who you are and ignoe the daily bullcrap that you see becasue it's not real.  Any time someone throws you off center, before reacting go to your journal and write down and ask yourself wuestions about the Truth of the situation (this is a toughy and may take time so don't beat yourself up if it takes a while to train yourself not to immediately react.)  Eventually, the every day bull will seem silly and mundane and you will no longer be bothered by the egoic nonsense other people fill their days with becasue you will be more centered and you too will merge with your higher self.

I can agree whole-heartedly about the value of journaling!

I began journaling in earnest last year, after some particularly difficult events in my life and a hellish period of grieving the death of someone very close to me.  As I wrote and re-read my writings, eventually I realized that two very different "voices" had emerged... it was like my journal had been written by two different people!  One was angry, depressed, bitter, envious, and afraid... very reactive, and very bogged down in negative emotions.  The other was peaceful, hopeful, wise, empathic, far-sighted, transcendent... very reflective and full of love and understanding.

A few months ago, this second voice began taking over the first.  And I recognized at that time that I was becoming more aligned with my "higher self" after many months of being unable or unwilling to tune in to it.

I might not have realized this so strongly if I hadn't kept that written record of what was going on with me and my life.  The great thing about journaling is that it really makes clear the ways in which you progress, change, and grow.  Every now and then, I feel like I'm still going nowhere.... but all I have to is read my journal entries from 6 months ago to realize that I have come very far!

Yup!  Pretty cool stuff huh Heather?  What is it about HELLISH YEARS that makes one take up journaling?  My year was pretty hellish last year too and that's when I started.  Now I am not journaling as much but when I feel confused, I find it beter than mere meditation, it helps me to figure out which "voice" is which.

Coolio Girlie!!

i don't know about keeping journals or anything like that but it seems as if it is a very effective way to get in touch with your higher self.

I got very into this during my earlier years when i was about 13 and 14. I practically dedicated my life to becoming one with my higher self or even just getting a taste of it. I lost focus on my schoolwork and was always constantly reading and trying new things in order to accomplish what i wanted. One day during meditation, my efforts were rewarded and i caught that glimpse of my higher self. It was a state of boundless love and peace and, as was previously stated, you feel one with everyone and everything in existence. Quite a powerful experience for a young teenager. This small taste of perfection and purity changed me for the better and totally turned my life around. Now I lead a very peaceful life, I find things such as arguments and fighting pointless and with this in mind i get along well with others, have a decent job and all things in later life that once terrified me as a child, now seem as a walk in the park.

...maybe i should of just kept a journal :) I think I'll start recommending that to others when they ask me from now.
for what shall it profit a man if he is to gain the world and lose his own soul?
