I've read and heard from others a lot of experiences where it has been neither books or scrolls. It could be seen as a computer terminal, or even an energy form to be interacted with etc.
It seems we each interpret such things differently.

I would get an old man in a library and sometimes he would show me the books and I would read them but on occasion he'd just tell me stuff.  I got better information that way because I forget everything I read almost immediately (in that state).
