I've found a great way to make it easier to see results for beginners to the energy manipulation sciences.

What I did was instead of folding the paper to a point in the center, I just pinched the sides enough to where there was balance on the 4 corners and leave some flatspace where the needle will rest in the center of that flatspace

it seems that the new one would be too unstable.  There is no place for the paper to 'lock onto' the needle as with the oldone.  the paper would get easily slid off the needle when a too much breath is blown, on the new one.  I think the old one is about good as youre going to get friction wise.

Looks like that its support is too wide to rest on a needle for more than a second. Random air movements and temperature changes, if placed in an upside down glass jar, can trip it, giving a false indication that you did that remotely.

it can be less stable, but so far I've tested it and you can balance it IF you make the corner folds the same as possible.

As far as air currents and updrafts go, a glass jar would be best, and so far I've blown air at the new wheel from a distance and waited for a minute or so, and the wheel didnt move a bit.

Also, try to find a piece of paper thats a little heavier than the usual writing kind, this too can help avoid false "alarms"

One more thing, just make it, it may look unusable unstable, but its not that bad at all. go ahead and get back to me.
