It's supposed to be a universal catalyst--for example, put the lead in with the stone, and you can use some process to transform the lead into gold--without the stone, the same process wouldn't work.  There may be some symbolic or metaphoric meaning to it as well, as most alchemical formulas sound like an orgy at the mythology bar.

Thanks for your relpies. I wonder how alchemy relates to hermetics? Because I believe I've read that hermetics was alchemy. But wasn't balanced training in magic hermetics? It sounds a little confusing.

The way I heard it, the stone is a tool for transmuting elements. Gold atoms have 79 protons. I seem to recall that alchemy was supposed to be literal physical transmutation of elements instead of just the practitioner. Since the physical world outside is supposed to still be in the mind, it should be within the realm of possible to change matter?

I think I read somewhere awhile back that it was an elixir that totally rejuvenates the physical, astral, and mental bodies. In the process you also erase all of your former developments and have to start over. Sounds like something I need to stay away from.

it is said that the Philosophers' stone was a "stone which is not a stone" .
This substance, which literally carried hundreds of other names, such as
"powder of projection" , the "virgins milk", the " shade of the sun" ...
not only could it help transmute base metals into gold, it reputedly could soften glass,  render its owner invisible at will, or give an alchemist the ability to levatate. it is also reported that the stone enables conversation with angels and the understanding of the language of animals.

I am an alchemist / metaphysic scientist, I believe the Philosophers' stone is the ability to control
ectoplasm ... which I have found to consist with the ability to create objects from thought, induced invisibility, and levitation.

I believe the cartoon "dragon ball z"  is  of the same consept.
the 7 dragon balls are: the 7 charakas in the body.
the "dbz" dragon is: the"serpent of fire", another possible name for the stone.
the "dbz" dragon's wish is: the mastory of psychic/ectoplasmic forces.

some questions need a little a brilliant mind to figure them out so i spend an afternoon on it, what I came up with basically was...

(1) a philosophers stone is included in the universal set
(2) its compliment, stoned philosopher must also exist
(3) A /\ B are mutually exclusive and substiantieted differential units thin the universal set of impressionable immersibility
(4) alchemy is a subset of all-chemies
(5) the set of all chemies includes marijuana
(6) a stoned philosopher is a philosopher + marijuana

realising that a stoned philosophers purpose is to define why he takes weed, that will take him a long time to find that reason.  the stone is just there to help him on his way to find that reason then the philosopher and his stone will be 1 and alchemy/allchemies can be removed from the universal set.

My understanding of Alchemy is that it is a transmutative process that can be applied to all kingdoms in nature - including the human - by the application of fire. By one process or another the ESSENTIAL element - the SPIRIT of a particular kingdom - is separated from its SALT - the GROSS material part. The ESSENCE is then purified by "distillation", the SALT by fire. These are then re-combined to produce an ELIXIR whose potency depends on its purity (number of times it's been processed), and the skill and "purity" of - would you believe - the Alchemist.

This ELIXIR can be liquid in its less potent state, or solid. It has the ability to purify less pure elements of the same kingdom by contact.

The Philosopher's Stone is the name given to the SOLID ELIXIR obtained from the MINERAL kingdom and does, apparently, turn lead into gold. Dimes into Krugerands?

The Alchemist's Handbook by Frater Albertus (ISBN 0-87728-655-8) is the first attempt that I know of to describe the process in plain English. In it we learn of the process, and of the apparatus needed to produce an ELIXIR from the VEGETABLE kingdom. Albertus tells us frankly that it's forbidden to describe the process for minerals.

What is the definition of the philosopher's stone and what is its purpose? Its talked about alot in alchemy but I could never find a definition.
