Odds are very good what you felt was not just in your head.  I personally believe that there is a good chance that they were meant to be her stones.  I am not trying to say that she should still have them but that she was the one that they were meant to help.  Different stones of the same type affect people differently.  It might be that the reason that you were able to feel the energy before was that the stones wanted you to know that they could work for you aunt, this was just a step on their journey to reach your aunt.  I know I am making it sound like stones have a personality, but in a way they do.  The stones have served their purpose for now and are looking for a way to reach the next person they will help.

I have experienced a similar thing only in my case they were always my stones.  I used them for several years but then they just stopped working for me.  I spoke to one of my guides about the matter and she informed me that they had helped me all they could and needed me to let them go so they could start their journey to their next owner.

About returning them to the earth, I don't know about that.  I would keep them with me and if I ever had an urge to give them to someone or leave them somewhere, I would do it.  If you lose them at some point do feel sad.  They meant to be left behind where ever it was you lost them.  I know this may sound far fetched, but I believe it to be accurate.

Last year I bought my aunt a pendant of amethyst, adventurine and clear quartz.  When I cleansed it I could feel its vibration and it made me dizzy, but I still had to program it for her.  When I held it in my hand I felt light headed and dizzy.  I programmed it to basically keep her healthy and strong. That was last Sept.  She passed away in January after the memorial I was given the pendant back, it was one of the 2 items she had on and she told them to give it back to me.  The crystals have been cleansed by moonlight, sage and salt but I don't feel anything from them anymore.  Was all that just in my head or did I really feel something?  Why can't I get the feeling back?  Have the crystals done there job and now just want to be returned to the Earth?
