Title: Comedies
Post by: LightBeam on June 04, 2020, 20:45:43
I think laughter is one of the best medicine. We need more of it nowadays. Here is my top list of comedies. I really laughed out LOUD, not just small laughs here and there. I highly recommend them to release some of the tension from the world events. If you have any top lists, please post them here.

Movies
Borat (brutal humor at times, but I honestly have never laughed harder)
The Hot Chick
Dumb and Dumber 1
Anchorman
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (I can relate because my native culture is very similar to the Greeks, being neighbors and all)
The 40 Year Old Virgin

TV shows
The Big Bang Theory
Everybody Loves Raymond
Keeping Up Appearances (this is an old British show from the 90s)

Haha, I came on this site to talk about OBE's and I've ended up talkikng about comedies!

Modern comedy is a mystery to me. I just don't get it. I believe that if I liked one, it would lead me to liking lots.

I'm really struggling to think of any movies right now but I can think of a lot of TV shows that I like.

I'd struggle putting them in order BUT 'I Love Lucy' is definitely my favourite. I discovered it about 10 years ago and I've watched it all twice.

'The Honeymooners' is a recent discovery and I'm about half way through it. I LOVE IT!

So, things I've watched entirely that I really like are...

I Love Lucy
The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour
Cheers
Rising Damp
Steptoe and Son
Fawlty Towers
Monty Python
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin
I Dream of Jeannie
The Addams Family
Yes Minister & Yes Prime Minister
George and Mildred
The Young Ones
Till Death Us Do Part
In Sickness and in Health
Blackadder

There must be more but I'm struggling to think right now.

Things I like that I'm in the process of watching...

The Honeymooners
The Lucy Show
Allo Allo
Hogan's Heroes
Bewitched
All Gas & Gaiters (only 11 episodes survived out of 33)

Dumb and Dumber and 40 Year Old Virgin are at the top of my list as well. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Horrible Bosses are also pretty funny. As far as a spiritual movie goes, Defending Your Life has its moments as well.

I feel like Adrian. It's definitely also Monty Python and Fawlty Towers for me. John Cleese is my favourite (English-speaking) comedian. 'MP and the Holy Grail' will always be my fav comedy movie.

Also loved the 'Naked Gun' movies.

But hey ... So far no mention of "The Office"?  :-o

Well, maybe one has to have worked for some years in a white-collar office environment like me. I loved it. Great mockumentary satire.

The British original version with Ricky Gervais (also one of my fav international comedians) is my favourite.

However, it shares #1 with... (drum roll ...) the German version called 'Stromberg' - which I assume nobody knows here, but believe it or not, it was really good, but also very 'different', and they even made a crowd-funded cinema movie in the end.

The US version is also good, at least the first seasons I liked. I loved the  crazy character Dwight Schrute!, but the show altogether is only on rank #3 for me. And the latter seasons weren't any good imv. They had lost momentum.

Don't know the other country versions as they are all only in their origin languages of course, and there's quite a few! See here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Office

However, there is another English language brand-new Australian version out now. I watched the first season on Amazon Prime only 2 weeks ago but I have to say it was rather disappointing. Reviews also were not too good (IMDB has a 4.4 out of 10 rating). Maybe it is too much of a cheap (late) copy of the US version, or maybe the franchise in general has run out of steam by now. (Apologies if there's any Aussies here, no offence meant, just my honest opinion).

Some of comedian Matt Rose's videos give me some serious belly laughs:

I had to stop this one halfway through because I nearly spit out my food laughing:
