The structure of the bar code is not in dispute is it? the inference that it is part of some conspiracy is the question

It does not really explain the funtionality of the guard bands, I suspect that this was/is used to synchronise the barcode readers clocks for accurate sampling as well as defining the numerical regions. This is I suspect the reason that tatoo codes on human skin would have the problems mentioned as the mark/space ratios would be difficult to be accurately determined. There are earlier number schemes such as ASCII which also include prefix and suffix data (one start bit and two stop bits)when transmitted. Not sure about conspiracy links for these numbers.
Maybe the Mark of the One has merit for Buffy fans at least, the Mark of the Two perhaps a sign of duality

the reference to the number 666 in the bible is a very esoteric reference to some complicated jewish numerology and not an actual literal number that you'd be able to find.

gematria is a subjective, occult practice. anyone who participates in it is guilty of practicing witchcraft. ironic, isn't it, that the very systems and arts used to write the agreed upon books of the bible are no longer allowed to be used.

like i just said, this is a subjective art. it's aimed at allowing the reader, through complicated numerological formulas, to get into the head of the writer. mystics used it to explain things that were unable to be written down in words. clever, no?

To clarify, is this a case being made for the barcode being the mark of the beast or otherwise?

I think I that is my preference also, engineers and scientists will use folklore and so on when naming new discoveries and the like. I have many times seen source code littered with references based upon some interest of the author, Tolkien is popular as are some sci fi storylines.
As to the bar code thing, I think it is just mind/eye and maybe some exploitation by authors.
