the death toll from the awful quake and resulting tsunami in Asia has claimed 70,000 (and rising), both natives and foreigners and left over a million homeless.
Traveling at 500 miles per hour the shockwave still took at least 3.5 hours to reach the nearest mainland (excluding islands in the epicentre)... if an adequate early warning system was in place, as in the pacific, this 3.5 hours would have allowed many more people to survive...

The one good thing that might come out of this is that we should start taking the issue of early warning systems for seismic events seriously around the world, something that the UN should be dealing with.

I believe these things happen for a reason. This tsunami might have another purpose, one that we don't realize. Perhaps to bring nations together, to overlook differences, to help friends and neighbors. I agree though, the death toll could have been much less. Perhaps this will prompt more communication between warring neighbors, and tolerance to avoid this kind of Mother Nature's catastrophe.

It seems the animals knew something was up.  They could have paid attention to them to get a warning.

Wildlife officials in Sri Lanka expressed surprise Wednesday that they found no evidence of large-scale animal deaths from the weekend's massive tsunami - indicating that animals may have sensed the wave coming and fled to higher ground.

An Associated Press photographer who flew over Sri Lanka's Yala National Park in an air force helicopter saw abundant wildlife, including elephants, buffalo, deer, and not a single animal corpse.

Floodwaters from the tsunami swept into the park, uprooting trees and toppling cars onto their roofs - one red car even ended up on top of a huge tree - but the animals apparently were not harmed and may have sought out high ground, said Gehan de Silva Wijeyeratne, whose Jetwing Eco Holidays ran a hotel in the park.

``This is very interesting. I am finding bodies of humans, but I have yet to see a dead animal,'' said Wijeyeratne, whose hotel in the park was totally destroyed in Sunday's tidal surge.


``Maybe what we think is true, that animals have a sixth sense,'' Wijeyeratne said.


Yala, Sri Lanka's largest wildlife reserve, is home to 200 Asian Elephants, crocodile, wild boar, water buffalo and gray langur monkeys. The park also has Asia's highest concentration of leopards. The Yala reserve covers an area of 391 square miles, but only 56 square miles are open to tourists.


The human death toll in Sri Lanka surpassed 21,000. Forty foreigners were among 200 people in Yala who were killed.

I really wonder if anyone saw a bunch of animals heading for the hills, I have to say, that would have freaked me out a bit.

You're right, they haven't said much about animal deaths. When the flood hit NC afew years back the coastal pig farms were deathyards;  the pigs had nowhere to go, thousands and thousands of them.

awwww that is sad...  I've had this weird fear of my house catching on fire while gone and my cats won't be able to get out..ugh, what a horrible thought.

No other nations are going to get seriously involved in the relief unless theres something for them to gain or it becomes their own problem, the real help is coming from individuals and communities who want to help these people.

Oh, the pig farms. I'm sure the pigs were upset when they were free'd from their immobilizing cages. These pigs were going to die and become food anyways, but I would prefer freedom with death than life in a cage.

Hi All,
These events were terrible for the loss of life they created.  And it is significant that few animals may have died from them.

When I lived in New Zealand, my cats would behave strangely prior to an earthquake happening there, which they do very regularly.  First thing I noticed was the cats leap off the bed and run into the lounge where they would stand with tails up, ready to spring into action if needed while they stared at the ground.

It only took one big shaker for me to realize that the cats were my early warning system !  After that I always made a point of watching them when they became agitated, and i am sure that it was a comfort to know we had some form of warning before hearing the booming coming up from the ground prior to the earth's shaking and rolling.

Something else I wanted to mention here....  in Australia there is a US base out in the desert that is well known here because all Australians including our Prime Minister are not allowed anywhere near there !  Strange how the US military can assume rights over the land of another country, but that is very normal for them.

While the activities at this base are highly secretive, which makes me think they are up to something foul, as is also usually the case with the US in other countries, there are reports from people who have had some experience with the base and it's workings.

One such is a man I know from the research group here I am president of.  He had the fortune to be taken there in OBE by another race external to our world, and asked to put everything he was shown on the Internet for all to see, which he did do..  unfortunately, the day after he did so it was removed and a notice was placed there that read, "For further information please contact the Pentagon at US Gov.  !!!!  What the ?

Now we all know that the US doesn't mind sensitive info being thrown about on the Web because the web is also full of much disinformation, and so it is hard for most people to discern the difference between facts and disinformation.

To the stuff this man was shown.....  (some of this has been proven now by government contractors)  At this facility, there is a massive arm-like structure that is embedded deep into the Earth that uses more water and electricity than the most populated city in Australia.  At the end of this arm is a directable nozzle that can be pointed at any surface area on this planet.

Apparently, this device works on principles devised by Tesla (which you can read up on the web) and is used to direct high powered but low frequency bursts to particular surface areas that will disrupt the plate boundaries and fault lines in the target area.

Now, I know this sounds like science fiction to most people.  But, let's go back to the Kobe (Japan) earthquake that was so devastating at the time.  In the very next prefecture there was a world class meeting of Earthquake researchers that were in Japan under the auspices of the US government at the exact time the Quake hit Kobe, but was only kept in that one region.. which is very un-natural to say the least.  It is now known in Australia that the Facility in the desert was highly active at that exact time, and it is show to be true in the water usage and electricity usage charts that are somehow now no longer available to we mere citizens.

So what I am trying to say is this.....  it is well known that the controlling orders/groups on this planet need to reduce populations by considerable amounts, and to do so in such a way for it to appear as a natural event, ie, famine, disasters, new diseases and warfare of all types.  Many times natural devices can be used to affect the needed results, and so I tend to think that this is one possibility for what we have just seen overseas.

But, I do hope I am very wrong about it.

COLOMBO (Reuters) - Sri Lankan wildlife officials are stunned -- the worst tsunami in memory has killed around 22,000 people along the Indian Ocean island's coast, but they can't find any dead animals.

Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 2 miles inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards.

"The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," H.D. Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told Reuters on Wednesday.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," he added. "I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening."

At least 40 tourists, including nine Japanese, were drowned.

The tsunami was triggered by an earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Sunday, which sent waves up to 15 feet high crashing onto Sri Lanka's southern, eastern and northern seaboard, flooding whole towns and villages, destroying hotels and causing widespread destruction."

all very interesting, but i think we need to focus on the human casulties here and the prevention of more, rather than nice stories about all the fluffy animal escaping. *Get donating people if you can!!!*
