A Louder Silence?

Hi,

Not exactly sure how to explain this, or whether this is the right place to do so, but hoping someone on this board can help me out.
A strange thing has been happening to me every now and then for the last year or so. Sometimes when I'm lying in the half-awake state in the morning, this intense 'sound' arises in my mind/ears/body in a kind of pulse. I say sound in inverted commas because it's less of a sound than an amplification of the 'sound' we experience as silence, that kind of buzzing hum of being human. Having read about astral projection for many years, for a while I thought this might be related to the vibration state people talk about, but this morning it was particularly intense, and kept recurring so that I was able to analyse it a little bit - unlike the vibration state, which it seems like one has lie completely still and reach a trance state to attain, I could shift myself in the bed, and within seconds of lying still, it would start again. I was even able to twitch my fingers while it was going on - and I'm pretty sure it was my physical fingers, not some dream or non-physical form. It's actually rather a scary feeling, particularly now I feel like it's not the vibration state and have no idea what it is. If I don't try and stop it, the pulse becomes regular, and increasingly intense, until I start feeling like my brain might explode, or I might have some sort of fit.
Can anyone relate this to any of their own experiences? Does anyone have any idea what this is?
About two months ago, I was again lying in the hypnopompic state, and I head a voice call my name and then proceed to tell me it was going to teach me how to listen to the "sounds between the silences" or something to that effect, and almost immediately afterward the same thing started happening. I don't know if that's relevant, could just have been my creative/dream mind mixing in with whatever else is going on, since I've experienced this 'amplified silence pulse' a number of times before that incident without any 'explanation'.
Any ideas much appreciated - this morning's experience was really quite unsettling!

I've had this since I was a kid. Often, at nights I still hear it. I always used to think it was like 'the sound of the Universe'.
Since I've been trying to astral travel and LD these past few months, in the last few days it's got even more common and I often hear it during the day whilst I'm walking down the road or in town.
From what I've read, it is sort of the sound of the Universe, but a sign of connecting to the collective unconscious sort of thing. I wouldn't worry about it, From what I've read, people doing this sort of thing are like kida turning a stiff tap and turning it on. The water will rush out for a while, but with practice you learn to control it.

There's a yogic practice where you sit and listen for a subtle sound in your head. When you find it you spend time listening to it till it gets louder and more intense. Over time(days, weeks) you're supposed to try and become aware of a more subtle, quieter sound behind it.

You then concentrate on that sound until it becomes louder and you stop hearing the first sound. Over time you're supposed to become aware of a more subtle, quieter sound, etc, etc.

You just keep trying to go deeper discovering more subtle sounds.

In the book I've got the purpose of it is to help you locate bindu(chakra at the back of the head) which they say cant be located physically until you have located it sound to its source. So you keep you attention at the back of your head while listening to the sound.

They also say you can listen to the sound in your heart space if you want though and that if you hear any sound in a specific location like the middle of your head or something you should hold your awareness there.

personalreality

that's tinnitus.

for some it is always present to an uncomfortable degree.  this level of tinnitus is considered to be a physiological disorder because it can have major impacts on the person's quality of life.

however.  i think there is something more to this "sound" we hear than just some disorder.  I really think it is the otherworlds.  When we quiet our mind an listen we can hear our inner self talking to us or even hear the "voices" of beings not of our physical reality.  A lot of times these experiences are considered to be hypnagogic or hypnopompic auditory hallucinations, but i disagree.  I think there is substance here if you teach yourself to really listen to the "silence".

be awesome.

There is a difference from tinnitus. I read an account recently(ish) from a scientist saying that this sound people hereis like a collective electrical hum or pulse resulting from all the electrical appliances in the house and from outside. I don't quite hold with that and think it's more 'the Silence', so to speak.

I think I'm reading your post different or something because to me it sounds like you ARE experiencing a vibration state, you're just experiencing it in your head area.  I get that too.  I also experience a shock when a noise happens in the room... my body physically feels the noise, if that makes sense.   This is different than what I think the others are saying.  I think they are describing what it's like after going to a concert you have that ringing in your ears when you get to a quiet place.  I could me wrong, I think there is a difference between the two.  I have a tv on all day long and when I go to bed at night, I can hear that ringing/humming due to just the noise I listened to all day.  Some times I can't stop focusing on it because as they say, silence is deafening.

kinkersnick

Thanks for all the interesting responses guys.
This isn't quite the same as the ringing in your ears after a concert, nor the kind of temporary ringing tinnitus you can get randomly sometimes. The intensity of the 'sound' increases if I relax into it, which is then accompanied by strange things happening to my body. Perhaps you're right Naykid, it could be some variant of the vibrationary state. It's such an unsettling feeling, but next time I will definitely try and go with it and see what happens.
Blis: what is the name of the book you are referring to?

Thank you all very much,

Steve

Yeah, try and work through it next time then do some exit technique.  Good luck!  :-)

I may be the sound of your chakras constantly absorbing energy.

I just started reading a book on Chakras, I'm finding it very interesting.  This could be a possibility.  :-)

Blis: what is the name of the book you are referring to?

Kundalini Tantra by Swami Satyananda Saraswati.

It doesnt really go into much more detail on that practice though except for telling you to sit in a medatative pose and "close the seven gates"(cover your eyes, nostrils, ears and mouth with your fingers).

Also, just the other day, Shineling mentioned, in this post, something called Surat Shabd Yoga. It is about meditating on the audible life stream. It sounded interesting but I havent looked into it yet.

Thank god finally someone else who has experienced this. I used to get this a lot before I started AP. Now I still get it every so often upon awakening from sleep either in the middle of the night and sometimes in the morning.
I know exactly what you mean about how it pulsates. It almost feels like pulsating waves or electrical surges in your head/ears?
It usually starts off light and if I don't sit up and wait, a second or 2 later ZAP it comes back and then fades and then again comes back more intense everytime.
It is deffinetly hard to explain. And when I experience it I feel as though I am awake and aware and not in the normal vibrational state. And it will continue until I sit up and make it stop. I really can't explain what it is or why it happens, but I wouldn't get too worried about it as it only happens every so often and it's not just you who experiences it

So last night I thought I'd try the practice I mentioned for the first time. I meditated for a bit then lay in bed holding my awareness at the upper back of my head and concentrated on the ringing.

After a while it intensified and later started to kind of pulse in my head. Fairly mild but a definate pulsation which is something I've never experience with the ringing before . I started trying to hear if there was anything more subtle underneath the noise but nothing came to me.

After a while I suddenly heard a very real crackling noise that sound like it was just outside my ear. Like it was coming from my ear lobe or something. Nothing for a while and then I hard it again. I also got a strange sensation just to the side of my right pec. So I shifted my awareness there as the book said to do that if you feel anything. After a few moments of doing that the crackling started up by both ears and kept going. The noise was kind of like space dust or popping candy or whatever you call it.

I just sat listening to that for a while examining my state of conssciousness.

The book called the practice yoni mudra btw although that term brings up a few different things in google.
