Title: Aids?
Post by: jkjk8991 on September 20, 2011, 11:33:45
So I live in a 4 person apartment and share a room with my friend. I rarely find time with the place to myself to meditate quietly, only here and there. I've been considering buying earplugs possibly, though I would have to cut out the binaurel beats and such for those times. It seems like it would be pleasant enough to simply not have any physical hearing sense.

I'm also trying to decide whether I want to invest in a blindfold of some sorts, I notice a lot Im worried my eyelids aren't closed or I'm figeting with them. My roommate also like to come in and turn our bathroom light on with the door open which shines right into the room. But I feel like it might be good to completely take away my physical site and hearing? Any thoughts on this, or has anyone tried this? Could also be a good reality check for false awakenings and such, if I can see.

I've thought about a combo of ear plugs and the big ear defenders you see workmen wearing.

I've heard the mindfold is meant to be alright. I keep meaning to make my own sleep mask though. If you made a mould of your face it would fit perfect round the nose area which is always where the sleepmasks I've tried failed.

You "can" invest in more "tools" to assist you.
But, why not use these interruptions as a means to learn to ignore them?

You won't always have your tools... and if you become reliant upon them, you'll find that you won't be able to meditate/project without them.  The goal is to use them to learn to experience what the sensations are, then to toss them and figure it out on your own.

I haven't really thought about it in this light, and I really like that idea. I do notice sometimes I get itches or something will twitch, and I just try to ignore that, and tell myself that it will only help me to ignore it, so I think I will go on just trying my best to ignore these things for now, it can only make me better at meditating in the end. Thanks for the input

The more you practice it, the easier it'll become each time.

What I do is visualize the "sound" washing over me without bothering me... just like lying down in a river and letting the water flow around and past you.  :)

Another technique for releasing sound annoyance is to visualize your body as a piece of Swiss Cheese and then let the sounds pass through you. I find the light more of a hinderance then sounds. I still use my eye pillow to daytime Phase.
