Title: Am I astral travelling?
Post by: Swizzy on May 03, 2011, 07:59:22
Hey guys I just registered on this forum because I've had a few questions on my mind about this for a long time!
I'm quite a fan of astral travelling, it sounds absolutely mind blowing yet I don't think I've ever done it.

Sometimes at night when I'm half asleep and thinking about the most random thing (as I do pretty much every night) I wake up feeling winded and borderlining panick attack state. Heart racing, feeling winded and as I open my eyes It feels like i need to take a huuuuuuuge breath, like i just spent 5 minutes underwater.
The oddest feeling though is just as I wake up I feel like I've been "dropped back in" to my body? I do suffer from mild anxiety but in most cases I wake up like that without something triggering the anxiety, its just how I wake up mid sleep.
Now as I said before I've never had an experience that was real astral travelling I don't think but I've read of the waking up process feeling like you are dropped onto your bed at 5cm height or something?

I find it very hard to remember more than snapshots or feelings about dreams the next day but I'm very open to this  and would be glad if any of you could tell me whats going on?
Maybe im just making myself believe something awesome is happening to me or something i dont know :P

Thanks in advance for any answers :)

You're experiencing the hypnopompic state. The crazy sensations may be due to non-physical experiences (like a dream or AP/OBE) you can't remember or make sense of upon awakening. To improve your memory and "in the moment" awareness I recommend mindless meditation. With persistent effort you'll start witnessing the exit process and having non-physical experiences with the same clarity you use in everyday life. There are also techniques for the sole purpose of projecting, and you'll find them in the FAQ, Permanent Astral Topics sections and scattered throughout the board as well.

Thanks so much for the response, all this has kept me wondering for a few years actually!

I forgot to mention that I frequently hear "knocking" sounds when sleeping. It's hard to pinpoint when exactly they are, I'm pretty sure last night it was in the middle of my sleep but sometimes it occurs in the morning and I rush to the door expecting a parcel or something but finding no one there, also checked with my housemate to see wether he was knocking. I've experienced this in several places I've lived, including different countries.
It's usually just 1-2 clear knocks, sounds like a knock on wood too!

I checked the FAQ and I'm reading through the LD4all.com website for additional information, thanks for the tip!

As a musician I find myself very interested in sound and the physics of sound and have frequently stumbled upon "binaural frequencies" that supposedly help with meditation and other things (I've even seen some for helping quit tobacco?) What's your stance on that?

I've never meditated before in my life! I have a racing brain and I rarely achieve these "moments of clarity". I suspect mindless meditation requires just that, a clear mind! I'm having trouble finding much on "mindless meditation". I've searched the forum but only found references, not a guide per se.

Thanks again for the clarification on what I'm experiencing! I'm a complete virgin to all this meditation/OBE etc but very very open to it as I know some peopel that do it regularly and it has always fascinated me endlessly!

As far as binaural frequencies... they are a helpful assistant to some but not the "magic pill" so to speak. I use hemi-sync via youtube videos I converted to my ipod. Here's the link if you're interested... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8eSuZ71S8k. It's 6 parts... don't use part 2 as it has a disturbing bleep noise in the beginning. Other binaural beats utilize music in addition to noise, and you can find them all over the internet and youtube.. I myself find music distracting.

There's plenty of info on mindless meditation on Google, but there are many focus exercises out there that can get you to projection... visualization, affirmations/mantras, tactile imaging, phasing, etc. You just need to find one that works for you.

BTW, you need to experience astral music... it in itself is mind blowing... I've mentioned here before it would make great inspiration for musicians.

Thanks for that, thats exactly the sounds I was on about!

Whats the best way of making use of them? Lie in bed with headphones? Or in a relaxed position on a sofa? I suspect you can use these together with meditating body positions?

BTW any idea about those knocking noises I mentioned earlier?

You're welcome. Yea you can simply focus on the noise.. this may be too abstract for you at this point but I try "merging" with the noise. Nothing else exists besides the noise and my awareness of it, in this state of mind. You can also carry out any focus exercise with the binaurals, some people use it specifically to drown out external noise.

As for as the knocking... it's probably your typical auditory hallucinations. People get a vast range of these and other random sensory input in the transitory states.

Yeah, get used to the knocking... also, be prepared for other random sounds.  I've heard everything from people talking, to gunshots, to full rumbling explosions (obviously without the "FEELING of rumbling).  LoL

They can be quite disturbing and shocking... especially when you're sitting there in complete silence.
