An unexplainable experience

I had this weird experience and was wondering if anyone could help me with it.
I was camping one time. (I was in a tent by myself) in the summer and I went to bed. I put an eye mask on so I couldn't see anything at all. I then clearly remember being able to see everything in the tent. I could see through the eye mask and was able to see everything. What was even weirder was when I was lying down I was able to see through the tent and see all of the stars above me clearly and vividly. I sat up (don't know if it was real or not) and started moving my arms about, seeing everything in my tent and i tried to grab what appeared to be my bag. When I tried to grab it though there was nothing there that I could feel. I was just able to see it. It turned out the bag was the other side of the tent. The entire time I had this eye mask on so there was no possibility that I could see in real life. I have never astral projected and I had no preparation  or had tried to AP or LD before this in a long time.
Any thoughts or explanations?

It was a spontaneous non physical experience.
Many experience these in their teens and pass them off as a wierd dream. The awareness you have is far greater than any dream and you never forget this.
There are some posts on site  with the same experience as you had but obviously in a different location.
Read the stickies on various methods of projection, if one looks interesting give it a go.
You may not get instant results but it's worth a shot.
There's far more where the eye can't see.
Close your eyes and open your mind.

It just so messes with my mind if I pass through something. I don't have many spontaneous projections but one a couple years ago I reached over to get something from the nightstand and went through it.  :-o :-o :-o :-o

I had this experience this summer and it's really made me want to try to AP I've known about it and tried before but I just don't really have the time. I think I'm going to start with LD and try that before I try to AP. Do you think this is a good idea or should I just try AP straight away?

That may be a false awakening. You think you're awake and it's so real too but you'll find something out of place or strange. Then you typically jump and wake up for real.
I've had many, a brilliant one was sitting on the toilet one night and not having much success ( I'll leave out the details lol), I saw something on the wall next to me and leaned over to press on it. As I was tired, I pressed too hard and fell through the wall into next doors bathroom.
A split second later I was awake in bed and tried the same again. The wall was solid and the other successful  :-D
Very real indeed.

You can try whatever you feel comfortable with. The art of projection isn't something you can force so it's unlikely to occur in one short try.
Its worth it in the end, these experiences are pure gold and nothing in any movie comes close to the exhilarating experiences you are an active part of.

I'm only 17 so I have a long time to try everything. It all just interests me so much the only problem is that i don't know where to start  :|

Aha a teenager, perfect.
When you go to sleep each night, just remember the stages you go through. Do your best to stay aware of being that personality that's the 'you' within and relax. You may drift into sleep later and later as more strange things start to be recalled.
In time you'll get the vibrations naturally.
This is what to do for now. Once you get the vibes, you'll know. The next step is to walk to another room in your house. It's that simple, it may take a while but start off with a room that's as far away from your sleeping body as you can get. Keep this room in mind each night before you sleep.
If your mind is ready you'll see progress.
The lights may be on, you'll understand this.
The room will be dark in the physical world though.

Do you mean remember the stages of sleep (like the NREM stages)? And recall these as I go along? I also just don't really know what to expect if I'm honest

Yep, it's a bit like the story of the young lad going through the mystical forest. At first he said no way. Each day he went in and remembered how far he went. When familiar with the way, he went deeper. Each time he repeated this his fear grew weaker and more forest was ventured into.
Eventually he knew the way easily and soon reached the other side. When he realised this he wondered what all the fear was about as the journey was easy.
Small steps each night remembering what you experienced along the road will get you there.
You'll meet signposts too, have no fear, you sleep each night and that's all you're doing. A twist here is to stay aware and PASSIVELY watch what takes place. Noises and visuals are there as well as feelings.
See how you go.

Thanks that's been quite helpful. I'm starting to try and I guess I will keep trying until I start to see results as this doesn't really involve changing my routine at all.

True, the basics are stay aware when you go to sleep.
