If you use a specific ration of breathing in : holding the breath in : breathing out : holding the breath out of 2:1:2:1 (the breath moves twice as long as it is held in or out) that will work. Breathing in : holding it : breathing out 1:4:2 works. I've also heard of 4:4:4. When you can direct your attention elsewhere and the pattern continues on its own you've got it. It takes practice to increase the numbers. If you start out with 4:16:8 you might find that you can switch to 5:20:10, but the moment it becomes uncomfortable switch to an easier multiple of the ratio.
