Hypnogogic stage

hello, when i reach the hypnogogic stage (light trance???)   ive read its possible to become consious in one of your  hypno.. images,   but this confuses me as i find that i MUST be unconsiouss for the images to appear in the first place, and if i do become consiouss during one of my hypno... images then i instantly zip back to my body.   anyone else know what im talking about?
