On Saturday morning I found myself in a dream reality, unaware that I was dreaming. From within this dream I decided to go to bed and attempt a conscious projection.

I immediately felt like I was on the brink of perceiving a new reality but it was shaky and unstable, I could tell I was close to losing it and I couldn't quite see anything. At this point an idea strongly came into my mind that I needed to be "in the now" without consideration of other thoughts. I applied it, and it took effect immediately, rendering in vision of a stair case that I was half way up on my hands and knees.

I found myself upstairs in a hotel room and this time I knew I was in a non physical reality. I went around the place taking close note of the positions of various objects so I could confirm their existence later. At this point I still believed that the former dream was my physical reality that needed to be compared. After a while I woke up twice and realized I was in a double nested dream.

I feel that the idea of being in the now was an important discovery for me, it was like having the idea, applying the idea and witnessing the results simultaneously. It may have given a taste of the mindset necessary.

You were always in a non-physical reality, even when you were in your bedroom "attempting a conscious projection".
You essentially used that sense of "now" to bring about your waking awareness AFTER your change in scenery happened.

Keep using that sense of "now", it seems to be a good trigger for you.  :)
