It's all in the perception and sometimes expectations/beliefs of the intent.
To paraphrase someone else, "the astral is a thought-responsive environment". This means you can go OBE and see what other people imagine Mars to be, or imagine what many people believe Mars is, or see what a movie director is conceptualizing for his next movie.
That's why I never believe catastrophe precognition dreams- they look a lot like future movies, more often than not.
It still could be "real" in a way because like us planets are living entities and also exist in different layers, planes, dimensions. As do objects such as a table in your room of which you see an astral (energy) version on the astral plane. Thus, he could have seen a higher (or lower) plane where life of energy beings exist.
Just like there's an etheric/astral plane 'around' Earth, Mars might also have an astral plane or whatever. We live in a multidimensional universe, so everything exists on multiple levels, seemingly.
I read in a book from a kind of channelling that the spot or turbulence on a planet which we see in the physical is caused by higher dimensional factors (being a city of energy beings on the same spot but a different plane there).
So, anything is possible. 8-)
