Conscious OBE with no history of spontaneous OBE

Can you define the difference between them?

I didn't have any OBE's (that I recall) til after my daughter died. After she died, I went through a spiritual crisis (and every other type of crisis you can imagine, too).  I had strange sensations as a result of asking help from a higher being sort-of-thing and it scared the you-know-what out of me.

When I came across RAM's book a few years later (still hadn't had an OBE that I remembered) I decided the sensations I had might have been pre-exit symptoms. I worked up my nerve to try to have an OBE. It took less than a week!!  I couldn't believe it. Still blows my mind.

But it happened after I had fallen asleep. I was trying to have an OBE, (for the whole week had been trying) I fell asleep, I became lucid in a dream (first time in my life), and immediately the shock of this altered conscious state snapped me into a real time OBE near my body. It only lasted about five seconds, but it was amazing.

Still - I have no idea if this 'counts' as a conscious OBE or not. It happened after I fell asleep, but it wouldn't have happened at all if I hadn't been consciously trying for it. (And I think it wouldn't have happened at all if I hadn't had the trauma a few years prior of burying my child.)

I always assumed that a conscious OBE happened like - you're sitting in a chair, decide to project, relax your body and walk away. But upon re-reading AD, it sounds like sleep can be present even in a conscious-exit OBE.  So what distinguishes one from the other? It currently seems to me that there are at least three types:

Spontaneous: no attempts being made
Conscious: Attempting OBE and succeeding before the absolute onset of sleep
????: Attempting OBE and succeeding after sleep begins (regaining consciousness during the experience)

Anyway - that's a long way of saying "I don't know" in answer to your question! Why do you ask? What has been your experience?

Thank you Patty,
I enjoyed reading your answer. For what it's worth, I'm sorry about your daughter.
You pretty much answered my question.
By saying "spontaneous OBE" I was just talking about the people that seam to have problems controlling their exit, as opposed to us that have problems exiting. Many people read the OBE literature only as a way to explain the weird phenomena that they have been experiencing. Those are what I call spontaneous OBE's.
I have been trying to OBE for 2-3 months, I read AD and am using the Wave I hemi-sync CD's. I haven't experienced much more than some vibrations (usually in my legs). Once the vibrations were so hard that I had to move because they tickled too much. I am still trying to master focus 10. Basically, I can put my arms and legs to sleep, but am having problems with the rest.
anyways,
thanks,

hi astralmaster(nice id)
Well i had one spontaneouse one when i was about 10 flew around my bedroom a couple of times then slamed back into my body (no vision).Scared the ***** out of me. I didnt have anymore until I became interested in them after reading Muldoons book writen in the 60's. I practiced the techniques and had another short one after a few months however as I left my body I felt all these hands grabbing my astral body and when i tried to enter my body again i felt I could'nt open my eyes, which I eventually did. This realy scared the hell out of me and I vowed not to try that again..However something just kept me realy interested and I bought over the years every book I could find on the subject. Then discovered Monroes books which realy inspired me to try again.I still have had only very short exits and reentries , the main hurdle was the fear, it can be a realy terifying experience, my body vibrating so hard that it feels like I'm lifting off the bed with the vibrations, and to just keep calm can be quite hard .Reading Roberts book gave me some peace of mind as he describes this feeling of hands grabbing at you, and says to just stay cool.....I find also the best time is about 3am ,go to bed early and set your alarm, when you wake up get up and have a pee and sip of water .When you lay down again your body is still realy relaxed and your mind is alert having had a good sleep. practice RB's energy techniques then relax and stay alert........you'll be amazed at your progress.....Travell well, in good ways.....Shandor

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your input. I would still like to hear from someone that has been able to achieve OBE, that has taught himself and has no previous history.

Hey there.  In the past half year I've been trying to get OOB.  I've read Buhlman's book and all 3 of Monroe's...I just came across Bruce this past week, which lured me here.  I have had dreams every night for the past half year, so that is noteworthy.  I will let you know when I dont just dream, lucid or not, and do it with full awareness.  The symptoms of a prelude to the OBE are there, but I'm just not achieving consciousness in the astral body.  I have however, I beleive, moved in my etheric body.
Hearing from people who have brought about an OBE through desire will be some extra motivation for my pursuit.

Damn, I hope I'm not alone on this quest..

astralmaster

I am copletely with you K2sixx.
I have been trying also. I have read most of the lit. out there. But i beleve i am advancing, and will hit my goal soon!!!
Yours

Awesome man.  I am surprised I hadn't given up after 3 months total of complete dedication to the process every night.  I have, in the last few weeks, had sucess with energy control and I do receive vibrations quite often now.  Just last night around 1am, I directed clumps of energy from my left hand to my right foot, then into my chest, into my head, and back to my hand... it took about 40 minutes to do this.  But lately these occurences are becoming more common.  I feel I'm due for an experience as well!

Hello astralmaster!  Previous to my own OBE, and metaphysical experiences... I had never had a spontaneoous OBE.  I suppose it took me about 4 months of really trying.  But there's such a thing as trying toooooo hard here!  I actually achieved my goal, after I *stopped* trying so hard... and merely gave myself the mental suggestion of becomming conscious as soon as REM set in.  (There are ways to do this.)  At the time, I was very into my own "search for spiritual truth"... and was quite heavily into Eckancar (having since completely turned away from it.)  However, there is a bit of truth to everything, and every religious viewpoint.  You might say that in my case, Eckancar was my springing board to achieving OBE.  But my goal was not to fly around,... not to play,... not to visit an earthly place while OBE.  My admonition was only.... "show me Truth".  And that I got that night....in full spades...in a full-blown OBE the likes of which I haven't experienced, since!  And then it seemed I had opened the door.  A door which is not easily closed.  From that night forward I began to have premonitions, OBE's, remote viewings, visions,...etc., etc.

So, good luck to you!  Yes,... you *can* turn this ability on via willpower... if you don't try toooo hard!  :)  IMO,... this is a natural ability inherent in every human being.  It is a matter of simply *remembering* that which is most natural to us.  A matter of *letting go* of the constraints and implications which this physical world imbeds in us.  To achieve it,... you must not "hope" for it, or wish that it might be so.  Rather,... you must *know* it without doubt... and simply let it happen.  After all,... we are all most likely living comfortably in the OBE state, prior to Mama's final push..... no?  :)

Just remember,... relive,... and enjoy!

Hello David,

I taught myself how to have OBEs about 25 years or so ago, without any previous history with OBEs. It took me about 2 years of off-and-on effort and when I finally had my first OBE it was - like Patty's - seemingly spontaneous. All of my OBEs for the next 20 years also had a spontaneous quality, in that they occurred when I wasn't expecting them.  It was only after I got on the internet (about 3 yrs ago) and read up about the 'vibes' and SP, that I was able to have an OBE when I wanted to.  It still doesn't happen very often, but that's mostly due to lack of diligence and being involved with the "real world" of raising kids, etc.

The methods I used were a combination of meditation (quieting the mind throughout the waking day), and lucid dreaming - specifically Carlos Casteneda's look-for-your-hands trick. It was actually a few years before I realized that looking-for-your-hands was in fact a lucid dreaming exercise! (Well, there *was* a dearth of literature in those days...) Anyway, I rarely used LDs as a springboard for OBEs because those always seemed more like 'dreams of OBEs', rather than "real" OBEs. Better to initiate them from a waking state, IMO, if you want an experience with more cognitive faculties intact.

Anyway, with all of the "how to" manuals out there you should have a shorter learning curve than I had.  I do think, however, that regular meditation and otherwise "keeping your excrement together" probably helps to avoid some of the nastier SP experiences that some people relate.

i also have not had spontaneous obe's til i started reading about it. the first one were low quality- dim light, little movement. after doing techniques in astral dynaics i found that it was relatively easy have spontaneous obe's.however the quality has not improved a lot , but ithink i am on the verge of better quality.

In the world in general and in this nation
May not even the names disease, famine, war, and suffering be heard.
May virtuous qualities, merit, and prosperity greatly increase
And may continuous good fortune and subline well-being perfectly arise.

Hi all,
Thank you for sharing your experiences with me.
All of your experiences are reassuring to me, especially BD's. It's nice to know that you can completely start from scratch, and that this is not a "gift" given only to some people.

HI ALL,
I was wondering, how many of you have actually learned to consciously OBE with no prior history of spontaneous OBE's?

thanks
