Will power with mental tension while trying to astral project?

So I have found that I really like to feel my way around in whatever technique I do with a little bit of visualization here and there. So one of the main things I like doing is feeling like I am about to fall or float out of my body. But this almost inevitable brings some brain/mental tension. So my obvious question is would that brain or mental tension be preventing me from getting out of my body? It's almost impossible for me to no use some will power without gaining mental or brain tension.

Any thoughts guys?

Do me a favour...

Think about a purple elephant.

Did you feel any tension there?

Well no.

Hahaha Xanth always has an answer to make you realise something. No you shouldn't be tensed while doing it. Not at all and yes it's what's gonna keep you from getting out. Get closer to the sleep state, instead of trying something, try just letting go. That's how I do I let go, I gently put my will towards my goal: phasing. As the visualisations become clearer, I let my consciousness sink. And as I do so visualisations get clearer and it keeps on like that until I have phased. Allow yourself to relax and go towards sleep. Allow yourself to feel the fatigue, and to realise how good you feel when you let it come to you. Stay conscious, but go towards sleep. Don't force anything, it's the best way of stopping everything!!

Tension is counter productive... and ALWAYS self-created through struggle of some kind.

If you can visualize a purple elephant just fine... then you can do anything you want without the struggle.  :)

Physical tension doesn't preclude the ability to project... it just makes it harder.  If you can focus away from everything physical, then you can project.

I'm not the best visualizer though. Whenever I visualize I find myself punching walls to help keep me with the visualization. LOL  :-D

Then that's our next question... what is Visualization to you?  What does it mean to you to "visualize"?

In my first post, I asked you to think about a purple elephant.  You did that.  That tells me you can visualize just fine.  :)

Well I can visualize though I'm not good at it. I get distracted, the image isn't very stable, it moves is odd ways, does weird things here and there. Most of all it's rarely vivid. Though sometimes I can visualize good, but most of the time I can't.

Read these... in this order:

The second one leads into the third really.

But suffice to say, what you're talking about above IS NOT "visualization".  If you can *SEE* what you're trying to visualize, you're not visualizing.  Contrary to the word "visualization", there's nothing visual about it.  This is why it's misunderstood and why so many people think they can't do it.  Robert Bruce explains it beautifully in the astral dynamics link above.

Give them a read and then realize you're better at visualization than you know.  :)

Well that explains a lot. I noticed that sometimes I was able to do visualizations in complete darkness with no visuals at all, yet I was able to perceive what I was trying to visualize. In fact I noticed that it was even better that way almost. That some time ago, but. So I think I could definitely improve my visualization ability regardless, but it's nice to know that I am on the right path.  :-)
