quiet the monkey chatter while (whilst if your British ) trying to phase, Monroe style.

This is a huge stumbling block for me as well as all the sensory input from skin, etc.

Mods, sorry, I think I put this in the wrong section.

okay, this might sound a little stupid, but what i've been doing is this -
as i have thoughts,i visualise the actual words in front of me,then blast them,as if they are space invaders, from the old arcade game.
then i'm left with nothing but the blackness...

it usually takes 2 or 3 times before the chatter stops fully but it's been working for me..

otherwise,i just force myself to focus only on my breath, but it's more fun to blast the crap outta those pesky thoughts.lol.

Haha, not stupid at all, it's funny though. Visualizations (and nearly everthing else) only works if it makes sense for you. Therefore it is always best to create your own exercises, or at least mold those of others to your liking. Space invaders is actually pretty creative, I like it :-D

yeah, I agree, a creative idea.

I do something similar I think, using the "cancel" command, and visualizing flames around me that burn away the spurious distracting thoughts.

I call it the funeral pyre of unwanted thoughts.

The other thing is, if I start to dwell on the frustration of making mistakes in the past, I imagine that I'm contacting myself in non-linear time and advise myself on a corrective action, and then let the memory fade or burn away. This doesn't erase the memory, but gives some relief and let's me continue focusing on a trance without chatter.

I visualize a small boat or dingy that's floating on nothing in front of me, and then I gently push it away. So every time a thought comes nagging it turns into a boat and then set's off into the black, leaving me by myself. The trick for me is for the motion of pushing it away to be gentle and almost automatic, otherwise that becomes a distraction in itself.

This morning I awakened around the third sleep cycle or so and decided to try and phase. I noticed the senses were dulled to the point of being a non player and monkey chatter was non existent. Pretty much a perfect scenario for phasing I would think. However, I was not successful in doing anything except falling back to sleep and dreaming non-lucid dreams.

Very frustrating for sure.  :-P

Put the thought in a balloon, tie the end and let it go.  Wave bye bye.

Get the next balloon ready...  :-P

Eventually I can have a few seconds of utter peace.  Time doesn't exist.

And then I think, "I'm doing it, YEAH!!!" which shatters the peace and I need to start all over again.
